Description Here is an imagined scene from the Doctor Who 1996 revival series that wasn't, featuring the Eighth Doctor and Grace.

I was recently discussing how the doomed series might have followed from the movie with . We agreed Grace would have been back somehow (I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed in interviews that she was intended to be the new companion?). I rather think that the Doctor would've tried to take her to the opera to make up for interrupting her last opera outing... And being the Doctor, of course it would be either the original premiere of Madame Butterfly in the 1900's, or some kind of space opera in the distant future and halfway across the galaxy. A handful of rampaging aliens and a still-malfunctioning time machine later, Grace's trip to the opera would be spoiled. Again. But it's the thought that counts, right? I imagine their adventure ending as pictured, because Time Lords need tea while they're tinkering with their time machines.

Also?

WHAT THE HECK, I DREW A TARDIS INTERIOR.

.... It would have to be Eight's, wouldn't it? Despite my deep emotional attachment to Nine and Ten's Tardis interior (I SWOONED when it showed up in "The Doctor's Wife", I kid you not) I think Eight's has to be my favorite.

So, I seriously fudged the console controls cause they were so tiny, and also I don't think the console is to scale with respect to the figures at all. But, um.... look, shiny! *distracts and runs away*

(Oh, acrylics on watercolor paper, if anyone cares.)

Oh I love this. But let's take one thing at a time, shall we?

1. Grace and Eight
2. Dress
3. Tardis candlelit interior
4. Dress
5. Dress

Yes, I loved the gown, the way you drew it is simple and lovely. I have to say, Eight's TARDIS was the most home-y and grand (if two such qualities can ever go together) which is why it loses something of the spaceship (I mean, if you ignore the tiny console in the middle) but I too had the same reaction when Nine and Ten's console room showed up.

You did such a wonderful job with this! The colours are very fitting but the thing that strikes me the most is the atmosphere. Helps you picture Eight's TARDIS right away. And I adore the whole story behind this, I can just hear Un bel di'!

Thank yooou, I'm glad you like the way it turned out.

I think you hit the nail on the head re: Eight's Tardis. It has those very domestic touches with the armchair and the Persian rugs and the bookshelves, and the overall warm lighting. And then it's positively majestic in the Cloister Room, and even at the entrance. I just love the whole thing.

The LIGHTS! the COLOR! The AMAZING! Your tardis interior is totaly awesome and detailled and i love it. Plus her costume which i covet and want. Plus his face and its sweet expression, and te so natural position of his body, and the comfortableness they are both in... i adore it. Also: steampunk or something. I love your inner tardis.

"Steampunk or something" is definitely going on in the 1996 movie sets. Sometime we can watch it together, but it probably really shouldn't be the first Doctor Who you see (though that worked for me apparently?). It definitely has the prettiest Tardis interior.

I'm glad you think his posture looks natural, because I drew about five thumbnails of that pose from various angles, and wrote things like "right pose, wrong angle" or "this is stupid and bad" by them, lols. I'm glad it finally worked out!

Because Eight totally uses candelabras for worklight.

Admittedly impractical, but, uh, pretty?

I assume the Tardis makes sure nothing catches on fire...

Oh, I LOVE THIS! So romantic! I would love Grace to have continued as Eight's companion. Would have been great!

Oh, and, as the man said, "Great minds think alike!" I've done stories with Eight and Grace at the opera and taking tea! Admittedly, not in the same story - though, I can't think why I haven't yet. Here's the links, if you're interested...

! Thank you so much!

Your stories both were lovely and sweet, thank you for sharing them! The idea of celebrating New Years Eve as kind of a "birthday" for Eight was so clever. And I loved the two of them having the same idea to go back to the opera! It's always a pleasure to see those little moments of peace and quiet when catastrophic things aren't occurring (yet).

You're welcome!

Thank you - on both counts! I got the idea to also regard NYE as Eight's birthday the first time I saw the film in 1996! I've done several other stories with the same theme - "Liebestraum Tapestry" with Sam, "Rescue Party" with Benny, "First Times" with my OC, Daisy, and "Milestones" with Grace, Chang Lee, The Master (Roberts) and Gareth Fitzpatrick (the security guard who wanted to know what was in Eight's hand). The links to these and my other stories can be found below my Deviant ID picture on my profile or by just clicking on "Teatime Tales" via either link above. The only story you won't be able to read is my Eight/Grace "adult" story - my ONLY adult story, "Una Bella Note". It's "Friends Only" at my LJ. I've posted some of my stories here in my gallery and in my journal. The gallery ones are either alone or accompany photo deviations.

I just have to say again how much I LOVE your "Time For Tea" drawing! Well done!

There are no words, NO WORDS, to describe how perfect this is or how much I had no idea I needed this in my life until now.

This truly is what should have happened. And Grace is in that (extremely 90s) evening dress of hers, can I just take this moment to say how much I love the graceful and accurate way in which the skirt of that dress is behaving here, and I really love Eight’s shirt and hair. The atmosphere and lighting in the TARDIS is fantastic, it looks so cosy and yet mystic at the same time, and the two of them look so happy and relaxed. And that TARDIS control – so much detail! That’s not fudged, that’s great attention to detail, that is!

As to which opera they went to, I’m going to say both. First the premiere, then the space-opera-with-fighting-aliens-and-saving-earth thing.

Eeee, I'm so happy you like it!

Everything about Grace's clothes is SO 90's, it cracks me up. Her hair could be worse, though, so that's something!

I was kinda thinking, oh, well, he's working on the Tardis, the Doctor should probably at least take off his cravat... and maybe roll up his sleeves. And it all looked fine in the sketch. And then I colored it and suddenly it was like "Doctor, put your clothes back on, this is a family show!!!" It's as bad as Metacrisis Ten wearing just a t-shirt and no suit jacket! Shocking and scandalous!

The console controls are fudged in that I didn't reference the actual controls, I just went "wheeeee, lights and dials!" Maybe those are the panels you don't see as clearly in the movie? Yeah. That's definitely what's going on.

Regarding the opera destinations, yes, both. Both is good.

And now you mention it, I think back on her actual outfit and realise how very 90s THAT is. Oh yes.

It's true, you get so used to the general "look" of a Doctor, because that outfit is pretty much what defines each regeneration, and then when they're not EXACTLY THE SAME everything just seems... wrong. Still, I must say I have absolutely NOTHING against seeing Eight cravatless and in shirtsleeves.

I'm seriously in love with the way you draw his hair~ great attention to details on the dials on the console. I don't care if you think it's "off", it looks amazing!

Thank yooooou <3!

(I probably could have dug up some stills from the movie and tried to make the console controls super accurate, but I have to admit it was way more fun just to make it up!)
