Russell has a genuine and good heart, but can be quick to jump to decisions without much thought and once he's made a decision it's very hard to change his mind. It's pretty obvious that he's very new to training Pokemon which makes him a pretty easy and gullible target right off the bat. If you were to tell him anything about a particular Pokemon he'd probably believe you. He's prone to argue with people he doesn't agree with, but isn't the sort to take permanent offense to anyone and is quick to bounce back from being insulted or put down.

Russell has spent nearly his whole life in Rosemill Village. He was raised almost single-handedly by his mother while his father was a part of the Pokemon League, often away on business outside of their small hometown. Also brought up in Rosemill with less exposure to Pokemon, Russell's mother had a bit of a fear or timidity about Pokemon which only grew with the unrest surrounding Pokemon training as a whole. Russell on the other hand had a great interest in Pokemon and had always aspired to become a member of the league just like his dad.

When Russell was 10 his father was killed in a Pokemon related accident. Grieving the loss, he wanted even more to become a Pokemon trainer like his father, however his mother on the other hand became hateful towards Pokemon and sought to stamp out Russell's dreams of becoming a trainer for his own safety. This ultimately led to a rather combative relationship between mother and son as Russell refused to give up on becoming a trainer causing his mom much distress. Russell became coined as the "rebellious kid" in his hometown as growing up he was often sneaking out and doing things to displease his mother. Even if he hadn't figured out a way to get Pokemon yet his mother was a pretty traditional person and he found other ways of upsetting her and getting back at her for keeping him away from Pokemon, such as piercing his own ears with a safety pin. Despite their rather tenuous relationship however, Russell did love his mom and continued to stay with her even after he legally could have left.

However this changed soon after the attack on Union City. Russell and his mother were never really in any danger, but the tragedy brought up old wounds and let to rising tensions between the two until they had one big blow up of an argument over Russell's unwavering want to become a Pokemon trainer and league member like his dad after everything that'd happened. The shouting match was pretty severe and there were some choice words exchanged leading ultimately to Russell's leaving home. His family had never had much in the way of money so Russell spent a great deal of time trying to find a stable job and place to live before he could even start to think about joining the League or obtaining a Pokemon. However one day Russell was approached by a member of team Zephyr who had pegged him as an easy target for recruitment and that he was. He knew that Zephyr wasn't the Pokemon League but it wasn't very hard to convince him that Zephyr was a good option for him especially with the offer of some of his first Pokemon for no cost aside from his commitment to Team Zephyr.
