Not really what I first had in mind.. but it proved to just be too much to add all of the ideas. Instead I centered this one around a different way for lungs to work!

The idea now lying behind this is that of a humanoid race that has lungs that work totally differently. They can breathe in or out pretty much endlessly through it's mouth due to the way it works and can chose to just breathe through the other holes if it wants to, need at least one hole to be opened on each lung to work properly. Those holes can be closed or opened if need be and lead to the possibility of getting fresh air into the whole lungs instead of just refreshing 2/3.5 Liters since it is possible to ventilate through the lungs in one direction pushing all of the old air out. That also makes it possible to breathe water, though that still wouldn't be all too efficient. Also: If wounded they would will not choke from blood filling their lungs.
