You had fun with the light, here, didn't you? Lots of fun. The contrast from one side of the painting to the next is very stark. The selected pose for Kyral is very dynamic, too. It makes the whole thing feel very dramatic to look at.

Due to homework at the moment, I can't give a terribly long critique. However, I wanted to give a critique nonetheless since I got to see you work on this a little through Livestream.
Your lights and shadows are beautifully constructed. I couldn't be more happy. Your "myterious blue glow" is actually what is known as reflective light - light that's bouncing off a surface and landing on another surface. In this case, the rocks onto the creature. So without knowing its actual name, yet being able to identify it and incorporate it accurately in the picture is amazing. Am impressed and really happy to see how much you've grown.
The creature itself looks a little too bunched up near its chest (making him look absolutely massive), but that's not as easily avoidable (because the anatomy and posture seems correct). One way you can "fake" it is to have part of the mane sticking out across the wings. That way the viewers can recognize there is space between the neck and back/wings. If this doesn't make much sense, let me know.
The scenery is grand and well colored. However, the mountains don't align with the horizon line very well. If you were to draw a line where the horizon would be, some of the mountains are shifted a little much to the right of the picture. Ways to fix this is before you draw, draw in the horizon line as a guide. It's not "cheating" or anything of the sort - lots of artists use this to make sure their artwork is accurate.
On that note, I wanted to ask whether the creature is about to take off or is just kicking off from that mountain. Reason I ask is because the creature and horizon line are parallel to each other (so if you were to ever straighten out the horizon line making it level, the creature would also be level).
The contrast from foreground to background is done wonderfully. You've got your classic spiral details near the foreground, and as you go back there is nice contrast between light and shadow. Everything levels out well - beautiful job!
After critiquing you for years (and even during my absense) I've noticed a pattern you do in all your work. You do beautiful jobs with your creatures - anatomy, color concepts, etc. The backgrounds, however, are always very simple and don't seem to have as much time dedicated in them. In order to have a great picture, you must not only look at the main focus, but what's surrounding it as well. This picture is beautifully done as it is, so I wouldn't really add anything to it. Just remember that background is important to experiment with as well.
Keep up the fa nomial work, Ny! Am looking forward to more of your pictures. <3

Awh, thank-you so much Shanree! It's so nice to get a different angle.
Thanks for all the tips and advice, I'll definitely keep them in mind next time!
I see what you mean about the horizon, and how it looks sort of deceiving. xD I was aiming for a 'valley' sort of look, so that I could have space behind Kyral and he wouldn't blend into the background.
Backgrounds are still a fairly new thing for me, so I'm still trying to figure them out. Believe it or now, I probably spent more time painting the mountains than I did painting the dragon. xD
Thanks again for your lovely input, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me! <333

Oh absolutely! You know I love critiquing your work.
Ahhh - well I've got this rather neat technique I'd like to show you sometime, then, to help with backgrounds. I don't have much time to show you now (since am in finals), but when summer vacation comes around I will. But to get you a little started, try making thumbnails prior to your picture. They'll help you think of different angles, light sources, and how to construct your focal point, etc. The example I showed is just one of the few done by my teacher, Joko Budiono. He is the master when it comes to thumbnails and pre-planning, so I'd check him out if I were you.
Keep up the great work, Ny! Can't wait till summer comes 'round so I can see more of your work.

wow...do you have any tips for me? I mean I'm new to digital drawing, so if ya have any tips on how I can do it in color that would be awesome. I've tried the grayscale method...but I'd like to try some other methods.

nybird In reply to Ealaain [2011-05-06 08:47:16 +0000 UTC]
I started off my shading by just doing all the base colours, usually just on one layer. Once you have the bases down, I replicate that layer, change the hue/saturation/lightness until I find a nice colour for the shadows, then I just erase where I want my highlights to be. It's a pretty simple technique, but there are lots of ways that you can apply it and branch off from it.
I hope that makes sense! xD
