READ BOOKS NOW!

This image is more of a lead in for my new project .... I am going to post lists of books that I have read in the last 60 years ...some of them are great books but have disappeared into the mists of time ...far from the public's eye. Yes, some of them (particularly the Science Fiction) will be "dated" but it is fascinating to see how things have changed in one lifetime. Some are old but are written about other times and places that no matter what era they were written they have no best before date.

As people have more time right now I thought a list of my all time favourite books might be nice. Genres are mostly Fantasy and Science Fiction but there are a few historically based fiction.

  • NOTE: If you want more of a synopsis or review on any of them just let me know.

  • A lot of these are older book (from the 60's up) the ones with the PLUS sign + were written after 2000

  • Anything that I am certain is Young Adult has a YA by it's name

  • Anything that is for even younger children (not many) has an EY by it's name

  • Some have a Star rating ...the ratings are from Goodreads

David Gemmell - 4.5/5 stars on most of his work

Probably my favourite author of all time ...sadly he past away in 2006 at the age of 58 ...he had written 30 books in his 22 year career. Truly all his work is worth reading ...particularly if you have a penchant for mythology, war, heroes, honour and fascinating, well established characters!

  • The Drenai Saga - 11 books I would recommend reading them by Publication date but I have listed them here in their chronological order ...you can choose.

  • Waylander (1986)

  • Waylander 2: In the Realm of the Wolf (1992)

  • Waylander 3: Hero in the Shadows (2000)

  • Knights of Dark Reknown stand alone books but set in the same world I have put them in their somewhat chronoligical order – they actually overlap in time . (1989)

  • Morningstar - sstand alone books but set in the same world I have put them in their somewhat chronoligical order – they actually overlap in time . (1992)

  • The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend (1993)

  • The Legend of Deathwalker (1996)

  • White Wolf (2003)

  • Legend (1984)

  • King Beyond the Gate (1985)

  • Quest for Lost Heroes (1990)

  • Winter Warriors(1997)

  • The Swords of Night and Day (2004)

  • The Greek Duology

  • The Lion of Macedon

  • The Dark Prince

  • The Troy Trilogy

  • +Lord of the Silver Bow

  • +Shield of Thunder

  • +Fall of Kings (he passed away before finishing the last book in this series, his wife completed it from his notes).

  • The Rigante Series - 4 books

  • Sword in the Storm (1998)

  • Midnight Falcon (1999)

  • Ravenheart (2001)

  • Bloodstone (1994)

  • Guy Gavriel Kay - another all time favourite! In order of prefernce:

  • The Summer Tree

  • The Wandering Fire

  • The Darkest Road

  • .... more of his work that I particularly loved, in order of preference

  • +Under Heaven

  • Tigana

  • The Sarantine Mosaic

  • Sailing to Sarantium

  • +Lord of Emporers

  • The Lions of Al-Rassan

  • .... anything else he has written

    Laini Taylor

  • Strange the Dreamer Duology: 4.5/5 stars

  • +Strange the Dreamer YA

  • + Muse of Nightmares YA

  • Katharine Eliska Kimbriel

  • Night Calls Series - 4.5/5 stars

  • Night Calls YA

  • Kindred Spirits YA

  • *Spiral Path YA (haven't read this yet ...was published in 2016)

  • She also wrote the Nuala Series ... I loved the first 2 but wasn't as fond of the last one, it has been a long time since I read them so not sure how they would stand up to a re-read???

    Sean Russel

  • Initiate Brother Duology - 4.5/5 stars

  • Initiate Brother

  • Gatherer of Clouds

  • Barry B. Longyear -

  • Circus World Series – 4.5/5

  • City of Baraboo

  • Circus World

  • Elephant's Song

  • May have been published in the 80's but he had a vision. The first 2 get 4.5 stars on Goodreads the last gets 4 stars.

    Louise Marley

She writes a real mix of genres so I have tried to catagorize them. She was a concert and opera singer so music plays a large part in most of her books. These are in order of my preference.

  • The Terrorist of Irustan SF 4.5/5 stars (no music in this one) .........

  • Mozart's Blood

  • + The Brahm's Deception (the covers of these make them look like Harlequin romance novels but one shouldn't read a book by it's cover, they are good. Not really a series)

  • Singers of Nevya Series (first 3 books also available in a single book - The Singers of Nevya)

  • Sing the Light

  • Sing the Warmth

  • Receive the Light

  • +Singer in the Snow

  • +The Child Goddess

  • +The Glass Harmonica

  • Hugh Howey

  • +Silo - The Wool Trilogy

  • I have only read WOOL but I couldn't put it down...it was great! Best to read this in it's Trilogy Omnibus available containing all 3 books

  • Wool,

  • Shift

  • Dust

  • There is some talk of AMC making this into a series.

    Ursula K. LeGuin

  • The Left Hand of Darkness SF

  • ...... a must, should be on everyones "To Read" list. Written in 1969 it won both the Hugo and Nebula awards ...one of the most famous examination of androgyny in science fiction.

  • The Dispossessed - another Hugo and Nebula Award Winner SF .....

  • Earthsea Cycle Series - Fantasy - Whole Series is YA

  • A Wizard of Earthsea

  • The Tombs of Atuan

  • The Farthest Shore

  • Tehanu

  • + Tales from Earthsea

  • + The Other Wind

  • Tanith Lee

Another of my favourite authors ...I read a review once that called her the Queen of the hot read ...take it as you will she wrote some interesting, unique stories. Here are the ones at the top of my list

  • The Birthgrave Trilogy

  • The Birthgrave

  • Vazkor, Son of Vazko

  • Quest for the White Witch

  • The Silver Metal Lover (there is a 2nd book but I haven’t read it Metalic Love)

  • Lycanthia

  • Sabella, or The Blood Stone

  • She has written so many books ...if you like these and you want more recommendations just message me or post a note here.

    John Hersey

  • White Lotus

  • (be warned ... this is not an easy book to read, the story is brutal but it needs to be, given the subject. It is very engrossing. Written in 1965, the story is one of racial injustice and social change, turned on its head in a truly unique way. Somewhat of an alternate history, imagine that China won a war with the USA ... this is the story of one young girl's journey in that world. It has only recently been published in e-format ...I was able to find it here www.ebooks.com/

    Sandra Gulland

  • The Joshepine B. Trilogy (Historical Fiction)

  • The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B.

  • Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe

  • +The Last Great Dance on Earth

  • The story of Joshepine Bonaparte from her early teens until after she married Napoleon, quite an amazing history)

    _________________________________________________

The next group (mostly Science Fiction) are all pretty old books so they may seem a bit dated but it can be fascinating to see what people envisioned as a future. All of these are on my "read again" list and (I believe) well worth reading.

    Robert Silverberg 1969

  • Nightwings

  • Man in the Maze

  • Theodore Sturgeon 1953

  • More Than Human

  • Charles L. Harness 1968

  • Ring of Ritornel

  • Olaf Stapledon 1944!!!

  • Sirius: A Fantasy of Love and Discord

  • When I read this in 1979 I was unaware that it was 35 years old and the author was born in the 1886 ...I found it a touching, sad but beautifully written story ... and from the very first lines in the book I would have not guessed it's age. "PLAXY and I had been lovers; rather uneasy lovers, for she would never

speak freely about her past, and sometimes she withdrew into a cloud of

    reserve and despond."

    Gertrude Friedberg 1966

  • The Revolving Boy

  • A very unique concept and she had a pretty interesting take on what the world would be like in 2002) more of a novella than a full book

    Kate Wilhelm
    1976

  • Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang

  • For Young Adults from when I was a YA .

    Andre Norton

  • Moon of Three Rings – there are more books to this series but they didn’t grab me like this one did.

  • (I read a lot of Andre Norton from age of 8 up ...so they are definetly YA. I can still remember the wonderful feeling of being in the library deciding which of her books I would read next.)

    Rae Carson

  • The Girl of Fire and Thorns (there are more in this series but I read them).

  • Barbara Sleigh

  • Carbonel Series: For pre-teens ... I remember devouring these ....EY

  • EY all 3

  • Carbonel (The King of Cats)

  • The Kingdom of Carbonel

  • Carbonel and Calidor: Being the Further Adventures of a Royal Cat

  •

I think that is it for now ...I will try and do another one of these during this time of self isolation and social distancing lasts ...we will see what kind of reaction I get.
