This reminds me of something reeeally stupid that happened in my game...
Remember how the NPCs can be dumb as bricks in Skyrim ? Well, once I killed the Thalmor assassin that threatened Malborn, I decided it would be nice of me to accompany him to the Morrowind border so I can make sure he made it through safely. And there, a dozen of meters away from that border, two frost trolls attacked us and that stupid bosmer thought it would be ballsy of him to charge them with his bare fists !
I guess he thought that his clothes and hands would make for a better combat gear than my Dragonplate armor and Ebony greatsword... Oh well, at least I could harvest some of his blood for Septimus ! Easy, it was splattered all across the landscape -o-
Moral of the story : don't let any NPC come close to a threat. Even if it's a mudcrab ! And that, unless said NPC is at least semi-essential.

I fought a dragon once and was promptly eaten along with my housecarl.
I gave the dragon a horrible case of indegestion and was promptly upchucked....
my housecarl had to wait a few days.......
and have one hell of a bath

To quote random NPCs from Oblivion:
"I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than you!"
