This celebrity doll repaint was inspired by Julie Andrews' classic Disney character of Mary Poppins.

I used a 16-inch Mary Poppins doll here produced by Robert Tonner Doll company - a very nicely made facial sculpt but the facial paint left much to be desired. So, I completely removed factory facial painting and hand painted it to more faithfully replicate Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. The doll's hair has been extensively restyled to more accurately represent the character's hairstyle from the movie.

The photo on the left shows the doll as it looked originally before repainting.

Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.

-- acrylic paint and ultra fine brushes

It takes a lot to make a doll look even somewhat human but to make it look like a PERSON that is well known is very hard. You did an amazing job.

Your work is really amazing! Apart from the fact that the repaint looks a whole lot more like Julie Andrews', this and the other dolls you've repainted look so much more realistically human than the originals! It's a real testament to your ability to paint skin tones and makeup - so impressive!

The original doll barely looks anything like her, certainly a very rough likeness of her. But you managed to capture her perfectly, right down to her lips and the ringlets in her hair. Beautiful.

I still say Dick Van Dyke shouldn't have gotten the role of the Cockney chimney sweep, or at least he should have gotten a real English actor to dub over his voice.
