Description
Oikawa Tooru x Fem!Reader
(Haikyuu)
Warnings: Long-fic.
You should have known.
Honestly, anyone else would have seen it coming from a mile away. You really wanted to bang your head into a wall simply at how blind you'd been. God, how could you have been so stupid?!
You tapped your finger impatiently, doing your best to try and breathe normally and force down the panic and sadness welling up in your throat. Despite your attempts at relaxing, tension thrummed through every nerve and you were as stiff as a board.
Your unwavering gaze was trained on the cafeteria's entrance. You weren't fazed in the slightest by the noisy chatter of your peers around you. You didn't spare a glance as you noticed some people in the corner of your eye staring shamelessly at you, raising their hands to their mouths and whispering in confusion to their friends. You stubbornly ignored the fact that a couple girls nearby were tittering and giggling with their designer handbags, triumphant smirks growing on their make-up caked faces.
They would be, you thought angrily, mentally hissing at them, stupid, stupid fangirls.
You see, it was common knowledge to the entire school that Oikawa Tooru was rather popular with the ladies, often showing off in front of them or humoring them by accepting their gifts, which subsequently led to quite the large fanbase.
It had also become quite common knowledge that he had finally toned it down and was now going out with a girl.
In fact, common knowledge stated that he was going out with the one and only [Surname] [Name].
Also know as: you.
Oikawa was quite the affectionate boyfriend, as you'd come to intimately discover.
He'd hold your hand 24/7, and when you lightly teased him for it, he'd just smile that blindingly bright smile of his and loudly proclaim that he wanted to show you off to everyone. Whenever you had a break period, he would be outside your classroom door waiting for you before the bell had even rung (you didn't even want to question how he managed to get away with it). He'd surprise you with sudden pecks on your lips while you were in the middle of speaking, cheekily saying you talked too much.
He would spend every waking minute with you, and the entire school knew it.
So it was only natural for the entire school to start gossiping about how the Oikawa Tooru's girlfriend was currently sitting in the cafeteria, all by herself.
"Aww," a simpering, sickly sweet voice interrupted your internal monologue, and you were rudely jerked back to the present. In front of you stood one of the girls you'd noticed twittering in the corner of your eye. She had on a disgustingly smug expression, and you wanted to slap it right off of her face.
"Did Tooru-kun finally get bored of you?" she asked.
You knew it was a rhetorical question, so you didn't bother deigning it with an answer.
While you were a bit irked that she'd referred to your boyfriend so casually, you decided she simply wasn't worth your time or effort. Instead, you turned your head to stare at the cafeteria entrance once more.
"You know, I'm honestly surprised you lasted this long," the girl kept speaking, raising a hand to prop on her hip, the smug look only growing as she watched you try to ignore her. "You're quite boring, and Tooru-kun already has a habit of losing interest in his girlfriends. Especially if they don't... entertain him."
Finally, your patience snapped and you shot out of your seat, giving the girl a nasty glare. You seriously would have slapped her if everyone hadn't been watching the confrontation.
"Listen here," you seethed, clenching your fists in anger, "you can say whatever you like about me. But don't you dare make such insinuations about Oikawa."
"Hmm?" she raised a mocking eyebrow, "Have I touched a nerve?"
You clenched your jaw, furious.
However, before you could speak, she continued, "But it's true, don't you think?"
"Shut up," you growled. "Just shut up, and stop acting like you even know him."
With that, you spun on your heel and marched out of the cafeteria, whispers and gossip flying as soon as you left.
Yet, despite your anger at the girl, the seed had been planted and suddenly doubts had begun to crowd your mind. After all, it was true that Oikawa was notorious for holding a relationship for only a month, maybe two. It was also true that he tended to have the prettiest girls, the most popular, the most interesting girls on his arm during those times.
But, but only yesterday he was being so affectionate—so loving—towards you.
What had changed? Did he just wake up this morning and realize that you were a boring bookworm who'd rather stay at home, curled up on the couch and watching anime, instead of going out shopping or playing sports?
The thought made you more scared than you wanted to admit.
No! You shook away the thoughts, firmly shoving them back into the dark corners of your mind. Something probably came up, you reasoned with yourself desperately.
God, the excuse sounded weak, even to you.
Doubts continued to swarm your mind.
You tried to ignore the fact that the hallway was depressingly quiet—the lack of his usual boisterous laughter eating away at you—and that you were currently walking all by yourself, and that your hand was clenching the strap of your bag instead of...
Stop it, you scolded yourself, it'll be fine.
He'll be there after the end-of-school bell rung to walk with you to the gym so you could go watch him practice. He'll be there to place a quick kiss to your awaiting lips and smile that adorable smile you'd come to love. He'll be there to prove all of your doubts wrong and show that he's the most dedicated boyfriend there ever was and tell you that he didn't mind all of your flaws and that he wasn't losing interest in you and—
Crap.
You really, really wanted to slam your head against a wall at how your thoughts always seemed to take a turn for the depressing. You mentally scolded yourself for pathetic you were being. Since when had you become to dependent on him?
You trudged into the empty classroom. Everyone, including the teacher, was still gone for lunch. Sighing, you plopped down in your seat and did your best to ignore the loneliness creeping up on you.
Then you perked up. How could you have not thought of this earlier? Quickly, you pulled out your cute little phone from your bag, shooting Oikawa a text.
To: Tooru-chan~ <3
Hey, where were you during lunch? I missed you lots!
You placed the phone down triumphantly and crossed your arms over the desk, placing your head on top of them and watching the phone with expectant eyes. Oikawa always managed to text you back within minutes, during school or not.
Ten minutes later, and you were still sitting all by yourself, wallowing in your despair. You watched glumly as your fellow classmates streamed in through the door, the bell signaling the end of lunch. You tried not to notice the curious and prying glances some of them shot at you.
You glanced once more at your phone—which was still devoid of messages or calls—before shoving it away into your bag.
You'd find him later, you vowed, and you would pry an explanation out of him whether he liked it or not.
---
The rest of the class day passed by sluggishly.
You simply couldn't force yourself to pay attention as the teacher droned on and on about various subjects. In fact, you were pretty sure you spent more time watching the clock than you did the teacher.
As the day neared the end, you found yourself constantly glancing over to the door, hoping to see that familiar mop of brown hair outside, waiting for you.
You didn't see anything.
Eventually, the bell rang and you stared down at your empty notes blankly.
He wasn't here.
All of those doubts that you'd tried to suppress came rushing back and you felt so, so small. Your classmates immediately rushed out the door, chattering amongst themselves, laughing and giggling with relief that the day was over. You watched them go, sadness slowly creeping up your chest.
Doing your best to ignore the sting behind your eyelids, you packed up and slung the bag over your shoulder, hesitating briefly outside the classroom door.
Should you go stop by the gym? Oikawa told you there would be practice today, but had also mentioned that you should go ahead and get home, since he knew that you would have a lot of homework to finish up.
You bit your lip, just standing there in front of the empty classroom, head bowed as you ran over your choices in your mind.
"[Name]!"
You immediately snapped your neck up, eyes brightening. However, when you saw it was not a certain brown-haired volleyball player, you deflated just as quickly. You mumbled a quiet 'hey' as [Best Friend] came jogging up to you, ducking your head once more, letting your hair fall around your face to shield your face from the outside world.
She looked surprised that you were alone, raising an eyebrow at you. "Where's Trashykawa?"
"I dunno," you mumbled, fiddling with the strap of your bag resting on your shoulder. "Have you seen him around?"
[Best Friend] looked thoughtful for a moment, face scrunching up in concentration as she struggled to remember. "I know I saw him this morning talking to a girl in his class before the teacher came in, but I haven't seen him after that. I thought he was with you."
You groaned at her vague answer, dropping your head in defeat.
"Well, he's not," you whimpered.
[Best Friend] immediately caught on, eyes widening at your depressed tone. She waved her hands in front of her in a panic. "Hey, hey! Chill out! I'm sure there's a good reason!"
When you didn't answer, instead dropping your gaze to the floor sadly, she sighed. "Come on, just go to the gym! I'm sure Oikawa's there waiting for you already. He probably got held up by his coach or something."
"He told me to go ahead and go home today," you informed her flatly. "Maybe he just doesn't want me to hang out with him anymore."
[Best Friend] gaped at you.
"Trashykawa told you to not watch him play?" she asked skeptically.
You muttered a quiet affirmation, hand clenching around the strap of your bag.
Despite your words, [Best Friend] shook her head stubbornly. "He's probably just worried about you and your classes. I'm sure if you stopped by to see him, he'd be really happy."
You could see the sense in [Best Friend]'s words, and your eyes brightened ever-so-slightly with hope. You shot a small, warm smile at your wonderful friend, a lighter spring in your step as you waved her goodbye, rushing towards the gym where your boyfriend was (hopefully) waiting for you.
A few minutes later, you were huffing and puffing outside of the gym doors—god maybe you should get off of the couch and watching anime and work out a bit. you were in awful shape. Taking a deep breath to steady yourself, you pushed through.
To your utmost surprise, the gym was empty, aside from the janitor and volleyball team's coach.
You hesitantly walked up to the coach, confused. Didn't they have practice today?
"U-Um, excuse me," you managed to squeak out, panic rising with each word, "is the volleyball team not having practice today?"
"Ah, hello there! You're Oikawa's girlfriend aren't you?"
You nodded, grateful that he'd at least recognized and didn't think you were some creep.
"Y-Yes!" you finally stammered.
The rather short man looked at you slightly in confusion. "We don't have practice today. I would have thought Oikawa would have told you."
Yeah, remember that panic?
It was full-blown terror now.
"W-What do you mean?!" you demanded, forgetting the fact that you were speaking to a teacher, your voice raising a couple octaves. "Oikawa told me he'd be having practice this entire week!"
The man looked surprised, and a thoughtful look flashed across his face. "Well, we did have practice all of last week. Are you sure you didn't just get it mixed up?"
You reigned back your emotions to the best of your ability, giving the teacher a shaky bow, "M-Maybe... I'm not sure. T-Thank you for your help, sir."
---
You roamed the hallways, still in a daze.
You weren't sure where your feet were taking you, but you absentmindedly wandered the hallway as you digested this new tidbit of information.
You see, the problem lay in the fact that you were rather sure. He told you yesterday. Plus, he'd mentioned for you to skip watching his practice, like he wanted to hide the fact there wasn't a practice from you! Why would he try to hide that?!
Why would he lie to you?!
So lost in your thoughts, you weren't watching where you were going and you crashed into a body around the corner. You yelped as you were knocked to the floor, hissing in pain as you landed painfully on your rear end.
"Eh? [Name]? What are you doing here?"
You looked up and met the confused gaze of your beloved Oikawa's best friend, Iwaizumi.
He extended a hand to help you, and you gratefully took it, allowing him to pull you upright once more.
"Iwaizumi-kun, have you seen Oikawa?" you tried your hardest to keep the desperate tone out of your voice, but you don't think you were quite as successful as you would have liked, considering the boy raised an eyebrow at you in surprise.
"No, I thought he was with you, especially considering we don't have practice today."
You twitched at the reminder.
"T-Tooru didn't tell me you guys weren't practicing today," you mumbled bitterly, turning your head to glare at the floor, his first name slipping out unconsciously in your hurt.
You didn't have to look at Iwaizumi to know he was staring at you in shock. "Hey, it's okay." You looked up at his gentle reassurance, watching his usually serious expression soften in sympathy. "Bakawa probably forgot. Or mixed it up. You know how he is."
"Yeah," you murmured quietly, unable to keep the doubt from your voice. You also knew that he didn't hold onto a girlfriend for longer than a month.
At Iwaizumi's snort, you looked up at him in confusion.
Then you flushed a horrible, horrible dark red as you realized you'd said that last thought out loud.
"W-Wait! I didn't mean—" you tried to stammer out, but Iwaizumi had burst into laughter and his loud guffaws drowned out your squeaks.
"No, no, you're right," he was still chuckling, even as your jaw dropped in horror.
What?
He literally just confirmed your worst fears!
He didn't even try to soften the blow!
You were, quite literally, about to burst into tears, when he continued, "Oikawa's that kind of trash that doesn't really take girls who confess to him seriously. He dates them just to get them off his back, and maybe get himself a make out session or two."
Yeah, you were never letting Iwaizumi become a therapist. Ever.
"But don't you remember?"
You clawed yourself out of your growing pit of self-pity at his question.
"Remember what?" you asked glumly.
Iwaizumi smirked knowingly at you. "You never confessed to him."
You stared at him blankly in confusion.
Then it hit you.
Realization slowly dawned on your features, and you gaped at the male in front of you, marveling at the trueness of his words.
He was right! you realized.
Oikawa was the one who confessed to you, not the other way around!
Now mentally strengthened, you smiled at Iwaizumi, the doubts finally beginning to lift off and fly away at his reassurance. After all, you were talking your boyfriend's best friend. Obviously he would know Oikawa best, right?
"Thank you so much, Iwaizumi-kun." you told him sincerely.
You bid the boy goodbye, feeling considerably lighter. You pulled out your phone, hoping to see that Oikawa had texted you or something of that sort, but you were slightly disappointed to find that you had no new messages or missed calls.
You sighed, shoving it back into your bag.
Maybe he was just busy or something.
---
Considering you couldn't seem to get a hold of your boyfriend—who usually walked you home—you decided to stop by the shopping districts to do a little browsing.
There was this cute little bookstore that'd you'd been planning on checking out, but had never actually gotten the chance to. Oikawa was never big on reading or studying, so dragging him into a bookstore was as hard as hard gets.
The bell above the door chimed as you pushed your way into the little shop.
You were immediately smitten with the warm, homely decor and aura. You smiled politely as the store owner—a pretty blonde woman who's hair was streaked with gray—asked if you needed anything, but shook your head and murmured quietly that you just wanted to browse for a bit.
You wandered absently through the tall bookshelves, occasionally pulling down a random book to read the summary.
Deciding on one that had caught your eye in particular, you made your way over to the little reading corner near the back. You settled down in a large, comfy armchair, snuggling into the soft fabric and flipping to the start of the book.
You didn't know how long you'd just sat there, absorbed in your novel.
Only when the bell above the door chimed and a rather loud giggle broke the air did you finally find yourself torn away from the pages.
You glanced up towards the doorway, leveling a glare at the sources of the racket, only to stop in shock at what you saw.
A girl with long, flowing blonde hair was trying to muffle her giggles behind a slender hand, smiling teasingly at the boy next to her.
And the boy next to her was none other than Oikawa Tooru.
You watched, horrified, as the girl said something, the teasing look never once fading from her face, and Oikawa just looked down, a bashful look sliding its way across his face. You tried to force yourself to get up, to walk over there and demand what was going on, but your entire body seemed to have frozen.
The two of them didn't seem to have noticed you.
The girl motioned upwards—still speaking, but you were too far away to hear exactly what—and Oikawa nodded, following her, and they disappeared up a flight of stairs.
You sat there in shock, in that comfy armchair that no longer seemed very comfortable.
Numbness spread across your body. You stiffly got up from your position, slowly placing the book you were reading back on the shelf where you'd found it.
You walked out of the bookstore, never once looking back.
---
You slowly made your through your nightly routine—almost robotically, automatically.
That evening, as you were prepared to head to bed, you pulled out your phone and stared at it.
Still no new messages.
The sudden urge to cry was overwhelming, but you forcefully choked it back.
Resolutely, you chucked your phone away and buried yourself in the soft blankets atop your soft bed, wallowing in your despair.
He stood you up during lunch, you thought mournfully, and then ignored your texts, and then lied to you about his practices, and then showed up in a bookstore—he hated bookstores!—with a really, really pretty girl.
If that didn't signal the end of your short-lived relationship, you quite honestly did not know what did.
You just wished that he'd spoken to you about it. Despite Oikawa's ruthlessness on the court, you didn't think he'd be so cruel to go behind your back or dump you without even letting you know first!
If he wanted to break up, you thought sadly, I wouldn't have tried to hold him back.
You were startled out of your thoughts as your phone beeped, signaling an incoming message. Heaving a large sigh, you pried yourself away from your warm, comforting sheets and clawed towards your phone, trying to reach it without moving anymore than necessary. Finally grasping the end of it and pulling it towards yourself, you glumly flipped it open, squinting at the bright screen.
From: Tooru-chan~ <3
hi [name]-chan!!!!!
Contrary to your usual joy at your boyfriend's late night texts, you felt your heart sink at the message. He wouldn't try and break up with you over the phone, would he?
"He better at least do it face to face, that jerk!" you muttered angrily to yourself.
You dropped your phone, burrowing once more into your bed. You attempted to fall asleep, but minutes later your phone beeped again.
From: Tooru-chan~ <3
r u already asleep?? u never go 2 bed this early
You growled once you saw the message, cursing the fact that he knew you—and your sleeping habits—so well.
You grabbed your phone, ready to type out an angry reply. But before you hit send, you paused. Oikawa clearly didn't know that you knew—or at least, suspected—and you didn't want to pressure him into breaking up with you over something as cowardly as a cell-phone text. You sighed, deleting the angry monologue you'd quickly typed out, instead replying with a quick "hi."
Moments later, your phone beeped again.
From: Tooru-chan~ <3
r u ok, babe? ur so quiet!!
There was a brief pause, but not long enough for you to type back a response.
From: Tooru-chan~ <3
u want me 2 come over? i kno ur parents love me ;)
Why was he being so nice?! Was this one of those usual break-up things? Where they let you go gently?
You whimpered at the thought.
To: Tooru-chan~ <3
I'm fine. Just tired.
You decided that the quick replies were best. Hopefully Trashykawa would take the hint and just leave you alone to wallow in your misery.
(at least, until tomorrow when he broke up with you properly)
From: Tooru-chan~ <3
aww feel better, ok? i wanted 2 talk 2 u bout something
Your breath caught.
Oh my god.
He was going to break up with you over the phone! Furious, you sent back:
To: Tooru-chan~ <3
Whatever, Bakawa! I'll talk to you tomorrow.
With that, you flipped over in your bed, resolutely ignoring the beeps of your cell-phone for the rest of the night.
---
You trudged into the school the next day, bags visible under your eyes, hair still mussed and tangled. You didn't get much sleep last night, considering stupid Bakawa kept you up with his incessant texting. After the first hour, you'd ended up just turning off your phone for the silence, but even then, sleep came sporadically and you didn't get much rest.
In the early hours of the morning, you finally gave up and reluctantly got ready. You were hoping that you'd be able to get to school early enough to miss the first big wave of students—the usual wave when both you and Oikawa would arrive.
Yet despite your ridiculously early rise, lo and behold, standing at the school gate was none other than Oikawa Tooru.
You scowled to yourself. You knew you should have gotten up even earlier, just to be safe.
He didn't seem to have noticed you yet, even though he was fidgeting nervously, eyes darting around, obviously looking for something... or someone.
You sighed. Better get it over with now, when there weren't many students around.
Oikawa finally caught your eye as you inched towards him, still fighting the urge to turn tail and run.
His face melted with relief, and without even a single moment of hesitation, he bounded towards you and threw his arms around you in a giant bear hug. Unconsciously, almost automatically, you wrapped your arms around him as well, catching him to make sure he didn't knock the two of you over. You buried your nose into his shirt, taking a whiff of his familiar scent (you were going to miss this. so, so much.) before gently pushing away from him to look him in the eye.
The male frowned slightly at your action, confusion flashing briefly through his chocolate brown eyes.
"You said you needed to talk to me?" you prompted, cutting straight to the chase.
Oikawa's eyes widened, and immediately a flustered expression slid over his face. He raised a hand to his head, ruffling the already messy brown locks.
"Eheh, before we get to that..." his voice trailed off, and the nervous look he sported briefly faded to a more serious expression of worry. "...are you okay?"
You averted your gaze, tension spiking through your body. You laughed, but even to you, it sounded too high-pitched. Too fake.
"Yeah, of course I am!" you said. "Why wouldn't I be?"
You smiled, but it felt—and probably looked—forced. Oikawa could tell, and the concern only deepened on his face. He shifted uncomfortably, and made an attempt to pull you towards him into another hug, but you neatly avoided his grasp, still avoiding looking at him directly.
"[Name], seriously, what's wrong?" He looked hurt at your avoidance.
"I said nothing's wrong!" you snapped, crossing your arms across your chest defensively. Your patience was beginning to wear thin. Why was he acting like this? Why wasn't he just getting it over and done with?! "Just get on with it already," you added, almost as an afterthought. To be completely honest, you weren't quite sure if you could handle this; what was inevitably coming.
Oikawa sighed, but obliged you. The nervousness crept back into his body language, and he took a deep breath.
"Look, [Name]-chan, you mean the world to me, you know that?"
Despite your best efforts, tears jumped into your eyes, but you kept your eyes averted so he wouldn't see them. You'd heard this speech before. The whole, "our time together was great, but maybe we should end this" and "it's not you, it's me" and all those shenanigans. You remained silent, letting him continue, doing your best to ignore the pain growing in your chest.
"I mean, I'd honestly do anything for you, even though we've only been going out for so little time."
Just spit it out already, you moaned in your head. Why was he doing this? Why was he just dragging it out?
"S-So um, I got you— I wanted— ah, fuck wait I have to get something out of my bag."
Finally having had enough, you stopped him by grabbing his arm, eyes still shadowed so he couldn't see the liquid pooling in your [color] orbs.
"N-No, it's okay Tooru-kun." Oikawa's eyes widened at your use of his first name and relief filled his entire body at your familiarity—but you didn't see it because you were still staring sadly at the ground.
"I u-understand."
He was now staring at you blankly, confusion replacing his short-lived relief.
"I-I've had probably the best time in m-my life with you, b-but maybe—" you hated how your voice cracked. "—maybe it's time we ended it."
Oikawa's jaw dropped.
"What?!" he demanded, horror spreading across his features. "What are you saying?!"
"I-It's okay!" You were quick to reassure him, wanting to do as much for him as you could, even if he no longer wanted you. "Y-You can still tell everyone that it was you who b-broke up with me, not the other way around. That way you can still keep your r-reputation—"
"[Name] are you breaking up with me?!"
You finally looked up, surprised by the raw shock and pain in his voice.
Suddenly, fury welled up in your chest. You couldn't believe this! He was actually playing the whole 'innocent' card?! You were so, so angry, and then suddenly you were yelling at him, not even caring who had stopped to stare at the school's most well-known couple.
"Yes, I am!" the fury boiled inside of you, eating away at your rational thinking. "How dare you, Oikawa Tooru! How— How dare you play that stupid 'innocent' card, when you're the one who's going behind my back, your own girlfriend!"
Oikawa stared at you, horrified, "I thought— I thought you would—"
"Oh, so now you fess up?!" Outrage filled your voice.
Oikawa threw his hands up in frustration. "'Fess up'? You make it sound like it's a bad thing!"
"'Bad thing'?! Oh, so you think cheating on your girlfriend is not a 'bad thing'?!"
"Cheating?" he gaped at you. "What the hell?"
"I saw you!" you snarled angrily, and to your dismay, a few of the tears pooled up in your eyes had spilled out, "I saw you in the bookshop, and you still have the nerve to try and—"
You were interrupted when Oikawa forcefully grabbed your arm and pulled you towards him, crushing you against his firm chest.
"I don't know what you're talking about," he mumbled quietly into your hair, as if you weren't trembling with rage. "I don't know why you think I've been cheating on you, but god I swear I will take any punishment you give me as long as you don't break up with me."
You froze in shock.
"W-What?" you whispered.
"Don't break up with me," he pleaded, pushing his nose farther into the thick tresses of your [color] hair.
"You— You don't want to break up with me?"
Oikawa pulled away from you slightly, baffled.
"You were the one who was trying to break up with me!" he exclaimed, raising a hand to tenderly brush away the tears that had trailed down your cheek.
You shook your head vehemently, your head spinning in confusion. "You were trying to break up with me," you insisted, "you were giving me the whole break-up speech; the whole 'it's not you, it's me' thing!"
"What are you talking about?!"
You were so, so confused. "You didn't talk to me all day, yesterday." you raised a hand, counting off, "You never answered my texts asking where you were, you lied to me about having practice, and then I saw you in that bookshop with that pretty blonde!"
Suddenly, Oikawa's chest began to shake, and you realized he was laughing.
"T-Tooru! What on Earth could be so funny right now?!"
"One," he raised his own hand to count off, "I totally talked to you. I walked you to your homeroom, remember?" He raised another finger, "Two, I accidentally left my phone at home, so I couldn't text you until I got back, which I did."
Before continuing, however, he pulled you over to the gate where he'd been originally standing as he'd waited for you. He rummaged around a bit in his bag before pulling out and handing you a wrapped present.
"Three, I lied to you about practice so that I could get you this."
You stared at the package in your hand. You shifted your wide gaze from the brightly colored gift-wrap to Oikawa's amused face, then back down to the present. When he nudged you and motioned to open it, you hesitantly began to unwrap it, careful not to tear the pretty paper.
You stared in amazement at the signed, limited edition copy of [favorite book].
"I was in the bookshop with that 'pretty blonde' because she's the daughter of the owner, and she said she could get me this, so I could give it to you."
You ran a shaking hand over the sleek hardcover, tracing over the curves of your favorite author's signature.
"I know how much you adore that book, so I wanted to get it for you, even though we've only been going out for about a month."
Your lip began trembling, but this time for a completely different reason than before.
"You mean the world to me, [Name], and I wanted to prove it by getting you something nobody else could."
You threw your arms around Oikawa, gasping out your thanks in between your sobs. Oikawa wrapped his arms around you and sighed contentedly, pressing his cheek against the top of your head. The two of you stayed like that for a brief moment, more students beginning to flood through as the beginning of class neared. A few stopped to look at the couple, but most just turned away with small smiles on their faces.
(the fangirls seemed to be crying though)
"So we're good now?" Oikawa asked quietly, still wrapped around your smaller form.
You nodded, throat still a little tight.
"You promise you won't try and break up with me?" you managed to squeeze out.
You could feel his lips curling against your hair.
"It'd never even crossed my mind," he promised, leaning down to seal the deal with a kiss.
