Description
My new character Nyxa-ref sheetI wanted to make a character that represented me this time. The design is based off of cheetah and snow leopard in anatomy with the feathers behind her head from a secretary bird. I feel like my personality is a lot like a mixture between dogs and cats. Lot of people say cheetahs are a lot like both so I thought it fit

The first thing that caught my attention is the care you took with the eyes. The way that the color isn't uniform lends so much life to the image. Speckles of the lighter green within the darker area make them seem very soulful. Brush strokes showing the individual strands of fur and the details in the feathers are also a wonderful touch and very nicely done. My only critique with respect to those is the long teal strokes leading back from the eyes to the head feathers. They don't seem to have the same individual strand state to them, so they appear a little less refined than the rest of the face. It might be worth considering blending the color in the same way that the white bits on the nose where it touches the eyes are done.
I love the whiskers, both under the nose and around the chin. They definitely add realism. Counterpoint to that are the bits of flying light throughout the background which add a feeling of mysticism and magic. I admit that I would love to be able to see more of this creature's environment, more of the area where it lives - but the blurred effect definitely creates an air of mystery as well as keeping the focus on the character rather than on a background scene, which is always a good idea.
Overall, I really like this piece, and I definitely think you've created an intriguing animal, and I do hope that you paint more with this character. Thanks so much for sharing!

I definitely love when I see art that has really deep eyes so I really tried to add definition to them here. I've tried to keep that in all my recent works too, this was kind of the start to taking more care with details. Yea I can see that the teal has much less detail in it than the rest. I remember feeling a bit confused when drawing that part because I wanted the color to stand out as bright and very lit but I didn't know how to keep the level of detail too. Since then I think I've learned a bit more about lighting and adding definition without losing the effects I want
yeah I was kind of obsessed with blurry backgrounds and floating light in scenes when I drew that. I wasn't confident in making realistic backgrounds so I kind of cheated my way through it haha. But I do think i can really push this piece more and make it so much more successful now! Thanks again for all the tips and letting me know what you liked about it (since now I'll know what to keep when I do it again haha). I'll definitely be creating more art of this character and hope you like the new version when I make that too XD
