A lot of the work I did last year was for DC Direct’s 1:6 scale action figure line. I got to contribute to several pieces in that line mostly sculpting the heads and various accessories. All in all these were just a bunch of cool projects that I was fortunate enough to work on and I’ve got to give Shawn Knapp over at DC Direct a big shout out for giving me the opportunity! Thanks Shawn!

This Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex portrait was the third piece I got to do and it was my first real attempt at sculpting a realistic celebrity portrait. Overall I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and I think Josh Brolin gave it the thumbs up as well so that’s pretty cool too.

The original head was sculpted in Super Sculpey, although these photos are of a raw resin casting as evidenced by the molding seam marks that run along the side of his hair. Speaking of his hair, it was intentionally sculpted in a slicked-down manner very tight to his head to accommodate the wearing of his hat which I also sculpted. I’ll upload some photos of him wearing it in a minute.

Sadly the movie didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, which is a shame because I’m a fan of the character and I think Josh Brolin makes a damn good Hex. Maybe next time… with a better script.

One last thing to note is that the skin texture on these 1:6 heads is very exaggerated for a reason. During production the heads are cast in a semi-translucent flesh-toned resin and the surface ends up becoming slightly obscure. The look of the texture becomes much more subtle and appears very realistic at this really small scale. It’s a pretty neat trick.
