Description This little seal was bigger than the pups but much smaller than the adults so I'd guess it was a year old.

It seemed very interested in me and followed me closely down the beach for a while.

Grey Seal - Halichoerus grypus

Donna Nook, Lincolnshire, UK.

Really nice shot of a gery seal weaner I work on donna nook surveying it for the lincs wildlife trust and the sea mammal research unit, so I'm always a big fan of great seal photos ^-^
As hard as it may be to believe, this pup will be less than a month old, the youngest he could be is 3 weeks. This is what all the pups will look like after their 2 weeks of suckling with mum and after they shed their white coats. They put on about 40kg in those 2 weeks with their mums, an amazing transformation!
Anyway good work ^-^

Nothing quite like a seals innocent looking face. Love seeing the detail of the tiny grains of sand clinging to his fur.

You'd think, with thier eyes being inky pools of black, they'd lack expression, but this guy certainly has some soul. Nicely captured.

"Inky pools of black" I love that description of their eyes, it sums it up perfectly.

Thanks

I enjoyed this Seal series.
This shot reminded me of how difficult it is to get a decent catch light in their eyes.
I've found it most challenging under every lighting condition.
I suppose it's the structure of low-light adapted eyes, similar to what one sees with many deep water fish.

Thank you

I noticed that also. It's very, very hard to get any kind of reflection in the eyes. It's a shame as I think a nice catchlight really brings a shot to life. I don't know what the solution is short of using fill flash which I would not be prepared to do as it a) may stress the seals and b) would no doubt look unnatural anyway.

I've tried the flash but it's not so great with flat light such as you described elsewhere. It was so-so with bright, direct sunlight.
A direct reflected image of the sun usually gives a great starburst but it's hard as hell to get the angle.
I've obtained a small steel mirror from a lady's compact. It's easy and safe to slip into a pocket and I'm going to try it as a reflector.

The reflector is a good idea. You can also get very small silver foil type reflectors which will fold up small enough to go into a pocket.

You keep making these great close and personal shots of these seals but we never really get any context for them. Is the area they are in just that crummy or are you interested in taking shots like that?

nitsch In reply to Esoteric-Imagery [2009-04-06 18:23:01 +0000 UTC]

The surrounding area is just several miles of flat, wet sand. The weather on this part of the east coast of England is often poor leading to grey or white featureless skies so there's not much to show. Having said that I have seen some shots from the same area taken with a wider angle lens when their has either been a blue sky or a nice sunrise and they are very impressive.

any chance of combining a decent landscape with these rather appealing seals? Might make for a most excellent shot.

I'll definately give it a go next time I'm down there later in the year. Thanks for the critique and ideas, I really appreciate it.
