Description I love fiery things . I'm not completely satisfied with this piece, actually. I was debating whether or not I should keep the wings, whether or not she should have that weird pattern on her arm, whether or not blablablabla and so on and so forth. I tried to go for a more dynamic-looking thing.

Full view is recommended, but I think it might actually look better from far away. It's not like I had any major details in this one.

Love the use of colors!
The figure is neat. I like the "belly window" a lot.
The wings indeed leave a better impression from a distance, like how I prefer impressionistic art in general. From that point of view, I find the burst at the bottom could've been more dynamic.

Better from Far away? Naw, that's just what all artists think because they can percieve--what they think--is the flaws, they realize how and why they had to 'cut corners.' I have always heard that, "meant to be viewed from a distance" but trust me, it looks great. Although percieving what we don't like, or what makes it imperfect, is just what makes us better as artists over time. The day that you think that everything you draw is perfect is the day that you fail.

Try this test: In an art program flip any image by your favorite artist horizontally and see how it looks exactly the same as it did before. Then flip your own art and see how it looks so completely different, new, odd and fresh. We are our own worst critics.

Actually I didn't mind if people viewed this particular picture from a distance because you get a better feel for the image overall--the background AND the subject working together ^^. I usually ask people to full-view something to see intricate details in some of my pieces that would otherwise be missed; in this case however, I didn't feel like it was imperative to zoom in. It's true, though, that artists are never satisfied .

Going out on a limb here, there are also times when "meant to be viewed from a distance" is actually a good idea or else you won't understand or get the feeling the artist intended. One example would be photograph mosaics ([link] for example). But that's just me being nit picky and picking the oddest example for the sake of typing more XD.

Funny that you mentioned flipping . I usually flip my images back and forth when I'm doing the preliminary sketch, and once again when I'm adding touch-ups before I finish. I did it 5 or 6 times for this one actually

Most of the time, as you mentioned, I see something odd and fresh, but there are also instances where flipping makes the viewer's focus wander to the "wrong" part of the image first (perhaps it has something to do with the direction we're trained to read, such as left--right and top--down).

Anyway, thank you for your comment. I get excited when people take the time to actually say something meaningful rather than go "omg cool ." Thank you very much, and thank you for adding it to your favorites ^^.

beautiful, i love this, i kind of think you should have submitted this one to unseen artists rather than the sonic one

Thank you again! Hmm, well I submitted Sonic for a purpose. Fanart always has a fanbase willing to fav+ and comment and perpetuate more visits on its own, but you need to get it out there first XD; It sounds horrible, but if I submitted the Rise picture, I probably wouldn't get as many people looking at it. I have this on another online gallery, and Sonic definitely generates more views than other pretty things.

Sure, it makes me more of an attention-whore and less of an artist painting for the sake of art, but if the purpose of Unseen Artists is to allow my art to be seen, gaining visitors through other people's Favorites boxes seems like a legitimate strategy to me XD; And at least I get to hide behind the fact that I truly poured a good chunk of myself into making this picture. It's a genuine piece of art that I worked for because of my childhood obsession, and not JUST because I figured people would like it.

Thanks for the comment, and I'm definitely glad you liked it

This is actually a pretty awesome concept.

What you might wan't to try is doing more with the runes, like, I don't know--covering her whole body or at least her arms and legs with them; kinda like ornate glowing tatoos?

NISSAN-J In reply to eflow1 [2007-08-06 03:11:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I tried drawing more glowing tattoos on her body, but it made her look too complicated/busy. Also, I had little patience trying to make it work out XD;; Thanks for the suggestion!

OH WOW. I love this! I know this is fairly lame of me to ask, since this is an original piece... can I use it on my lj? If I credit and rave over it and... ohhh the pretties...

Make more of her, please?? Maybe siblings of different colors?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NISSAN-J In reply to popularlycontrary [2007-07-18 06:38:28 +0000 UTC]

^^ Glad you like it.

Sure, you can use the picture on your LJ for as long as you don't do anything to completely change it. I was wondering if you could provide a link or just the url to my deviant art page somewhere, if you could ;

Btw, regardless if the piece is original or fanart, you should probably ask permission from the artist ^^.

I might make more versions, but that really all depends on inspiration XD.
