Actually... I believe May as her own character is implied to be abit older than 10, as if you chose to play as Brendan in any the Gen 3 games, it's implied she has been a Pokemon Trainer for awhile, to the point of being an assistant to a Professor, who if you chose Brendan, is her father. Play as May, and it's said the same with Brendan, with roles switched. So I'm assuming player characters of the Hoenn games are older than 10.

She's older than that in the original Japanese version of the anime's manga adaptation, explaining why she has big breasts in the manga like every single female character in the story!
