  Shooting at Lovecraft's creatures rarely seems to have any effect, at least from my experience.

This was in "Pickman's Model" where Pickman, talking to the narrator, hears something and,excusing himself, goes through a door and the narrator hears shouted gibberish and then a volley of gunfire and a squawk. Pickman then returns. muttering about rats. During this lapse, the narrator finds a photograph and this item causes him to become the latest person to cut Pickman socially.

I have seen Pickman's paintings...

  yes, I know the story well!  But, did he actually kill the ghoul or just scare it off?  I played the Call of Cthulhu RPG many times, it seemed when characters started using guns is when control was lost, the guns rarely had any effect on the monsters.

Thank you!   Very little of that ghoul is depicted, so a lot has to be conveyed through it's eyes.

Whenever I read "Pickman's Model," I know I would have gotten the "get the hell out of Dodge" impulse the instant I heard that scraping.
