Description Hi, fellow watchers and wtacherettes!

I usually start the days with some quick 90-minute warm-ups to get in the right mood for heavy inking. And since I've been in a bit of a vampire kick lately due to watching Guillermo del Toro's The Strain series (which I recommend wholeheartedly!), I decided to tackle the subject. I've also been reading Shankar from argentine B&W master Quique Alcatena, so when you combine these two forces, you get what you see here.

Nosferatu was one of those films I watched when I was very little and caused quite an impression on me; the eyes of Count Orlok would always stare at me from the darkest corners for a while and I tried to capture some of that simple and striking horror here. The black and white I think helps give the whole composition that gothic atmosphere an illustration about Orlok should have and reaffims my love for this medium. I hope I can get back to it often!

Have a great week and see you soon!

Β Rather amazing work Master Aerion! (just looking into the eyes of Graf Orlok was enough to make me reach for the nearest sun-lamp).

Thank you as usual, my friend! The eyes were a detail I took care of particularly, since they were the key element that Schreck used to convey Orlok's evil nature.

Β Given the degree to which the rest of him was … well lost from sight by virtue of such extensive make-up it's a good thing Herr Schreck had such expressive eyes (which I must admit are rather essential for any cinematic vampire worth the cloves of garlic needful to hold him at bay - such as Mr Bela Lugosi or Sir Christopher Lee!).

Love your depiction of Orlock here. What's your opinion on the 1979 remake with Klaus Kinski?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to tranimation-art [2014-09-09 02:43:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you as usual, m'lady! As for Herzog and Kinski's remake, I think it was a great film, yet for some reason it lacked the primeval horror and unnerving quality of the original. And I like Shreck a bit better than Kinski to be honest.

tranimation-art In reply to NicolasRGiacondino [2014-09-09 05:22:58 +0000 UTC]

Shreck was definitely more "alien". I loved when he would turn -- his eyes turn, then his head, then his shoulders, then his body. It's that sort of subtlety that made Shreck so unnerving. Kinski was definitely more "human" and sympathetic. I enjoy the Kinski's performance immensely, but the film itself is longer than what it should be and slower than what it should be; it's very artsy-fartsy. Β I do prefer Shreck's more.

I also love SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, with Willem Dafoe as a vampire playing Shreck playing a vampire... Β So wonderfully meta!

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to BatArchaic [2014-09-09 02:47:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much, Sean! I think silent films had such a captivating atmosphere, mostly because it was up to the viewer to 'hear' the film, thus enhancing the experience and actually making it all the more 'collaborative' between the audience and the movie.

Your wish of a novel in this style from me might just come true soon

THIS is how vampires should be. Vampires were never meant to be handsome and charming, they were meant to be terrifying and would rip your throat out in a heart beat. I want a vampire horror movie about Nosferatu. No romance, no special effects (back in the day they used stuff like real animal blood and various other materials to make the props), no "Imma sparkle you to death", and the actors don't know what's going to happen so when they piss themselves it's for real. I would give my arm to have that movie happen.

I couldn't have said it better myself. And Guillermo del Toro actually made the same remarks when talking about his directing on 'Blade II'; though at that time, he complained about 'Interview with the vampire'

Thank you so very much for the compliments!
