Diana was born of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. The Amazons are a race of warrior women who live on an island called Themyscira, which is hidden from the rest of the world by magic. Her father was Zeus, the god of thunder, but Diana wasn't supposed to know that. Hippolyta told Diana that she had been sculpted from clay, and that a blessing from the gods had turned Diana into flesh and blood. Diana spent the first few thousand years of her life training, her mother wanting her to be the best Amazon that there had ever been. Her skills would finally be put to the test in the year 2000. The turn of the millennium is theorized to have temporarily weakened the magic around the island somehow. This allowed a United States Navy SEAL named Steve Trevor to wash up on the shores of Themyscira. A contest between Amazons was held to determine who would take Steve back to Man's World. Having wanted to explore the outside world for thousands of years, Diana took part in the contest. She beat all the other Amazons, fulfilling her mother's wishes of becoming the best. Armed with the powerful lasso of truth, Diana took Steve Trevor back to America -- leaving behind the home she had known for so long. Upon her arrival in Man's World, Diana quickly realized that they needed her help. Knowing her Amazonian abilities could make a difference, Diana crafted a costumed persona with the help of Steve Trevor. Wonder Woman was born...
