I enjoy this image a lot, feels like taken from a story-book and it makes me want to see the rest of the pages. Wish it had been traditionally colored though, maybe watercolor, that would have made this something far more than just "a quick piece" of color practice

I have a painting I did (I really need to get a good photo of it) of something similar. I decorated the antlers of the skull in gold rings, pulling inspiration from Celtic, Mezo American and Indian gold jewelery for the decorations on the figure.

I bet he's gonna perform a hunting/rain making ceremony.
Something like sacrifing a stag while singing this song:
[link]
It's "Suvetar" from Gjallahorn, a finnish prayer to the Goddess of Spring and Summer.

Why did he became a pagan? And why would he think of human sacrifice?

Nhaar In reply to AntaresDrake [2010-09-12 04:18:40 +0000 UTC]

Nice song! I do love me some pagan music. I could certainly see Toby singing something along those lines.
Ryn was a pagan country before the conversion of the king to christianity, so Toby practices the Old Ways because that is what he was taught to believe, and he would like to preserve it.

Toby's not one to sacrifice, he's not that kind of pagan. The Old Ways are most relatable to modern day Wicca, with it's rede of "Harm None". So while he would perform a spell to better his hunt, he wouldn't necessarily kill anything for his gods, whether it be stag or human or anything in between.

AntaresDrake In reply to Nhaar [2010-09-12 05:23:06 +0000 UTC]

So he would burn incense before an altar dedicated to a deity, pray, and perhaps even fast?
Are his siblings christian?
Are you wiccan?
I thought he was a vegetarian. Do December and his brothers have lovers/ spouses? Are there any Cealdian charachters that are gay, bi or lesbian?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhaar In reply to AntaresDrake [2010-09-12 06:08:51 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, so many questions!

Yep, those are the kinds of rituals I'm talking about. Casting circles, meditation, esbats and sabbats and all that good stuff.
Some of his siblings have adopted christianity, while others aren't so sure. Toby is probably the most blatant about it, which isn't so great since Caedmon outlawed the practice of pagan religions after his own conversion.

While I do have a special fondness of wicca and other pagan religions, I'm a total athiest. If I did practice a religion it would probably be some form of druidry. Toby is the personification of that aspect of my personality, I think.

Toby's not a veg, because it would be incredibly difficult to pull that off in the middle ages (most meals were meat, meat, meat). It's likely he wouldn't have even considered being veg a possibility.

Some of the bros have lady friends, others don't. December is actually all set up with an arranged marriage that has yet to take place. November is very popular with the ladies too, but is more interested in pursuing his military career.

There's not any mention of lgbt characters in Cealdian because it would not be taken well in the middle ages and I have to try to stay true to that. It's not a theme I'm planning on touching upon in the story. That doesn't mean there are or are not characters like that in the story, just that it won't really be touched upon.

Does Toby ever get into trouble for being a pagan? Which became christians, and which are still undecided?

If Toby (I call him Tobias a lot) lived in the present age, would he be a veg? I'm quite certain he would.

Talking about Middle Age food, I remember that in the Cealdian website you mentioned that books about the middle ages would have loads of chapters about food. Makes me hungry, Lol XD!!! But why do they focus so much on food?

I was wondering about that. If I was set up for an arranged marriage I would flee from my homeland. Spending all my life with someone I don't love is not something I'm particularly fond of. I believe Elizabeth didn't love Faran at all. She wasn't even upset in the slightest when he died.

Did she have other children besides Adrian? At which age did she got married? I bet Faran had been previously married, but his wife died in childbirth. I would become a nun if I lived in the middle ages, with pregnancy and childbirth being so risky and no way of preventing unplanned pregnancies and STDs.

Nhaar In reply to AntaresDrake [2010-09-12 21:17:32 +0000 UTC]

Toby does get in trouble for it, but I can't really talk about that yet, I'd give away the story! XD

He probably would be veg. He'd also be a ridiculous hippy type, I'm sure.

I'm not sure why the books focus on food so much. Probably because what people ate tells us a lot about their societies. Hunter gatherer diets are a lot different from those of agricultural societies, etc. It's also just pretty cool to know how their diets differed from ours!

Adrian is Elisa's only child. She married when she was 14, and Faran was in his 40s. He was not married before that, though he had plenty of lady friends.

Yeah, smoking pot and being all "peace and love bros" XD!!!

How did their diets differed from ours?

She married when she wa 14? That just screams pedophilia.
And why do you say "ladyfriends" instead of "girlfriends"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhaar In reply to AntaresDrake [2010-09-13 00:11:11 +0000 UTC]

They ate a lot more meat: basically anything that moved: eel, finches, and porpoise are some odd ones. And of course a lot more local food: everything that was eaten was grown on the king's lands. Salt was used pretty frequently as well as other spices: the more spices used the more extravagant the meal was considered.
I'm talking about lordly meals though. Peasants usually ate pottage, which was a thick vegetable stew, some milk and meat only when they could get it, which was quite a bit less often.

Because girlfriends makes it seem like he had committed relationships. It's more like, he slept around a lot basically.

They could only get meat from the animals they raised, if someone hunted from the lord's land then he or she was sentenced to death, right?

He did enjoy going to the whorehouse quit a lot, didn't he? Faran you sexy manho XD!!!!
