Oh, woooow! This is cool, Knuckles with a shot gun! A Shot gun!!
But, yeah, you have a point with the emerald being outside all the time. The palace you made looks beautiful, and other worldly, and looks like something you'd expect to see in a fantasy story! Just one question though, how did Knuckles bring the emerald down there? Did he carry it?

In my fanfics, it took Knux and the Chaotix, and they lined up a couple of teleporters so they only had to move it a few feet. I love drawing Hidden Palace. It's from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and it's nearly as spiffy in game. Just google it for a look. People are always doing panoramics.

I do believe you would be right.
Those young fans are just drawing it how the Sonic X cartoon and Sonic Adventures portrays it though. So you really can't blame them.

I'm sorry dude but you just ruined it by giveing him a gun.
He's a martial arts master, to use a gun would be going against his tribes code.
The only reson he has the spikes on his knuckles is cause his tribe would use the Master emerald's energy to grow them, hence the Knuckle clan.

I love the shiny marble-like surface of the floor, and the way the colors reflect off of it. Kudos for the pillars too, I can never work up the patience to work with them. I love the idea of Knuckles wielding a shotgun. "BROKE INTO THE WRONG BASEMENT, DIDN'T YA?" BLAM!

Are you aware that .jpg is lossy and detracts from the quality of your work? You keep saving in that format and I just can't understand why. Maybe you have some sort of good reason I am not aware of.
As far as the piece itself... there's just this random black scribble in the upper right I can't comprehend. The pillars themselves are also inconsistent; I understand depth and its relation to loss of detail, but you have some closer to the foreground that have almost no detail in even the border, some in the background are random triangles amidst flat walls... Unless your echidna society were completely ADD, I would envision a palace such as that to be mostly consistent at least in the pillars all the way down the walk. You mentioned tracing some photo from Egypt though - I suppose I can let that go if those pillars really were in disrepair.
I'm also not sure about the light source and the shadows. I haven't studied light too much, but Knuckles' shadow(s?) seem to be working as if there were multiple light sources very close up - instead every visible light source is far off in the distance, and the setting would imply that there's even more directly above and behind the POV, which would imply that his shadows should be a little more evenly disbursed around him rather than just an obtuse angle. Even if that's not the case, and the only light sources are to the front of the POV, his shadows seem a little too strong, and also really strangely divided.

I hear you, X. I don't really save stuff as JPEG anymore. I'll keep a temporary JPEG version for posting but I'll save the permanent as PNG at least.

Hey, lossiness may suck, but it also sucks when all your viewers hit the back button before your art was done loading because the 3MB PNG took so much longer than expected to load, as compared to a 500KB JPG.
PNG may be lossless, but in painted art and photography, the file sizes are often 3 to 10 or more times larger than even a 100% quality JPG.
Basically, a JPG at 85% or higher quality looks so similar to PNG-24 that there's really no justification for using PNG, unless you're saving images with limited palettes (IE cel shaded works), or you need transparency, which is where it excels.
That's the "good reason" as to why almost all artists and photographers are still using JPG for web publishing.

I can accept that point to an extent, but the world is fast approaching a point where a 3MB image is laughable to load. In addition, DeviantArt has both a small view and a full view mode for most works, which will itself cut down on the load time by giving people a smaller peice.
Above all else though, there is virtually no point in using jpg for digital works; the piece won't be seen in any other form, so why not choose the best format available? To put it in perspective for you, this would be like artists of old working for however long they worked on a beautiful piece, only to ultimately decide that the world should see the work behind three thick slabs of glass, all of different colors - and not for artistic value, but instead so they could place it outside, but safe from sun, theft, and weather, so more people could see it. The end effect is that the the original work would look almost smoky, and hard to analyze - impossible to even accept as beautiful.
Art is a medium of beauty, and settling for anything less than 100% is completely counterproductive to what the medium is.

Yes, and one day we'll be there, but we aren't yet.
My 56k friends still wait 9 minutes + to load a 3MB PNG. On my satellite connection, I only get about double that speed. Even if everyone had T1, it's still half a minute. And when you're on that speed you pretty much expect every image to load in less than 5 seconds. XD
Furthermore, I still have the original PSD in 100% perfect quality, so I can "upgrade" the published JPG by replacing it with a higher quality copy. When I first started publishing art in the early 2000s, I tried to get sizes under 200kb. Then I went to 350kb or so. Now I'm at 700kbish. And, I started publishing webcomic pages at 500px wide, then 720px, and now I'm going to 1000px. And someday, when lossless is reasonable, I'll go to that, too, and with joy, because I hate seeing compression on my work. But frankly I suspect a better format will be invented/supported before PNG-24 ever becomes viable for millions of colours images.

56k may still exist, but it's also very uncommon now. Mind you, I'm not some spoiled guy who has had fast internet forever. I had dialup for a good two years, and my experience during that time was very image-heavy, reading thousands of webcomics. There's an interesting point there; if people actually like your work, they WILL sit through any load time, especially if they know it's the best quality available. I guess it's just me, but every jpg artifact I see makes me respect the artist that much less. (This reached levels of infamy when I started seeing jpg artifacts on ANIMATED TELEVISION. I dropped a whole series because they couldn't stand to give us the best quality.)
It's all well and good to say you can upgrade them later, but then you lose your hard drive to some sort of calamity - suddenly you won't be able to, and you will be remembered as a .jpg artist in the distant future. (Maybe this is an extreme point, but nonetheless - I think it's safe to say no artist who saves their work in their program's file type will upgrade it unless some freak demand for it came up. An unlikely event.)
As for your last point... The thing about better formats is that they won't come any faster if there isn't an obvious demand for them. If people are content with jpgs, nobody is going to research better, probably because it's difficult to get the new format out to every single computer. If PNG or even LESS lossy formats(which I'm sure exist, I'm not well-read on that though) became more widespread though because they presented clear images, effort would go into researching more space-efficient formats that do the same.
Incidentally, I did a quick google search for 3MB images and I was presented with many incredibly high resolution images, larger than my screen. Those equal or lower than my resolution used countless different colors; without the source image I can't know for sure, but given the choice and array of colors for NR's image, I have my doubts it would be even close to 3MB. I could be wrong though.
