Description
Chapter 2
London, May 1944
It was time to leave. The brave soldiers took their time to say their last goodbyes to their wives, fiancées and their family.
One of these soldiers was soldier Ray Kowalski. His parents were from Poland, who had fled from the first war. They figured they couldn't be safe in that war and they went to England, hoping for a new future. When they were allowed to come and live in England, they decided, to show them their appreciation, that their only son would go to the army. So he would be serving the country; the country which once helped them when they needed it the most.
"Don't you worry, honey." said Ray and he looked to his young, blond wife. "I will come back."
Anne Kowalski looked to her husband. Just like his family, her family fled out of the Poland too. But that was somewhere in the 1938, when the first signs for a threat of attack were visible. That year, one year before this war started, her family figured that it wouldn't be safe for them to stay in Poland. They travelled to the west, and decided that the United Kingdom was the safest place for them. "Just don't rush yourself, Ray." whispered Anne.
Ray smiled. "I won't, Anne." he said and he placed his hand on her stomach. "I want to come back in one piece, so I can see this little miracle." Since they found out about her pregnancy a couple of days ago, Anne had begged Ray not to go. But Ray couldn't leave his 'brothers'. Anne tried to hide her tears, but Ray had seen them already. "Trust me, my blond love." he whispered. "I'll be back, maybe even before this sweetheart is born." he wiped her tears away.
"Soldier Kowalski!" suddenly sounded and Ray straightened his back. That was the voice of his good captain. The captain was like a father to him. The soldiers knew that he would die for them, and they would die for him. But they also knew that they all would come back alive under his watch, no matter what it would take to do that.
"Sir, yes Sir!" said Ray and he turned around. He looked to his dark haired captain. Just like Ray and many other soldiers, he brought his wife to say the last goodbyes before they would go to war.
"Your wife is pregnant, right?" said the captain and Ray nodded. "I'm glad that you will come with us to the battlefield, but someone needs to look after your wife."
"Our families are both gone, sir." said Ray. Right before the war started, Ray's mother died and his father disappeared into thin air. Anne had lost her family when they needed to board in Holland. There was no place for them to come along and they told her to go and find someone who would take care of her. As if sent by God, Ray was there on the docks, just wandering around. She bumped into him and told him in broken English what had happened to her. Ray decided to take her home and it didn't take long for them to fall in love. They got married and now they were expecting their first child.
"Soldier Kowalski, meet my wife." said the good captain and a black-haired woman appeared next to him. "This is Mrs. Woo."
Lucy Woo gave them a little smile. "It's nice to meet you." she looked to the young couple and understood immediately what was going on. "What do you think, Andrew? Should I..."
Captain Andrew Woo nodded and he looked to his soldier. "Listen, Kowalski. My wife is going to the country side, to a good friend, after us soldiers have left the country. I think it's the best thing to send your wife there too. You may never know what might happen in the cities."
Ray looked to Anne. "What do you think, Anne?"
Anne looked from the couple to Ray. "I think it's the best thing to do, Ray." she whispered. Even though she didn't know these strangers, she had a good feeling about this.
The sound of the car horns let them know that it was time to leave and Ray gave his wife one last kiss. "I have to go, Anne. But remember that I will come back!"
"I'll miss you, Ray." whispered Anne and she gave him one last hug. "Just come back home soon."
Ray smiled and he grabbed his bag. He walked towards one of the many trucks and before he went on board of the truck, he looked back one more time. "Take care, my dearest Anne." he whispered and he stepped on board of the truck.
Andrew looked to his wife and gave her one last kiss. "I'll be home before you will know it."
Lucy smiled and she straightened his tie. "I know, dear." she said and she gave him a kiss on his cheek. "Just go now." Andrew smiled and he walked away. Once her husband was gone, Lucy looked to Anne. "My name is Lucy, Lucy Woo." she said with a smile.
Anne gave the lady a little smile. "I'm Anne Kowalski." she whispered.
"Why don't we go to your place? To pack some things." said Lucy to the shy woman. She knew it would be some experience for the young woman, but figured that she would be all right.
"That sounds good." Anne looked how the trucks left the marketplace and she felt the tears in her eyes. "Why did he had to leave now?"
Lucy placed an arm around Anne. "They will all come back, Anne." she said and she carefully guided to young woman back to the street, so they wouldn't be staying there forever. "The war will be over any day, don't you worry about that."
"I just hope that you are right."
