This...this makes more sense than it rightfully should. I was surprised, yet not appalled. Why? Well forgive me for going on what may be a rather long tangent and it probably has nothing to do with your original intention, but I must explain why I approve of a stronger bond between these two characters.

Simply put, Princess Bubblegum is infatuated with death and this coupling is the physical incarnation of the concept. How did I come to this? Why by examining P.B’s forays into the world of science! A look at the essence behind P.B’s experiments reveals more than just morally dubious methods. It reveals an underlying theme of questioning and probing the boundaries of life and death. Let’s list them.

In one of her first appearances we see her making a “Decorpsinator Serum” for the unapologetic purpose of bringing dead people back to life. While this initially created zombies, she was rather undeterred and decided that perfecting the serum was the best solution to solving the zombie crises. Luckily this worked in favor, yet her curiosity lead her to experiment on zombie tissue which eventually leads to a second zombie outbreak in the candy kingdom. This is her fascination with resurrection.

Then we have Lemongrab, who is a “failed experiment” created with the candy-life formula devised by bubblegum. He was the first born in this way and it can be inferred that candy people can reproduce in some other way. Even now P.B still has the formula and used it to produce a second Lemongrab in an effort to sate the first unstable sociopath she created. Eventually this resulted in many lemon children who almost devoured the Candy Kingdom and would have continued to wreak havoc on the world. P.B’s need to probe repeatedly into such an area shows her fascination with the creation of life.

We cannot ignore Goliad, the candy sphinx whom Bubblegum created to rule the Candy kingdom forever. She openly admits she wishes that could rule ever on and that Goliad is the closest she can get to obtaining such. Goliad quickly turns evil and abuses the innate power given to her by her mother and P.B’s solution is to create another immortal sphinx (notice a pattern yet?) to combat her eternity. This is her greatest endeavor for immortality.

Where in a little candy world she nonchalantly snips and sticks limbs from people in perhaps her bluntest display of “playing God” to date. (It also reminds me of the "The Mysterious Stranger" scene from The Adventures of Mark Twain)

Finally in “The Suitor” episode we have P.B not only unhealthily obsessing over her scientific studies, but her experiments are on people’s very souls. She even goes so far as to create an artificial soul because it’s easier for experimentation. All of these examples illuminate P.B’s curiosity with the notions of life & death in all forms.

Then there is the Lich. He is more like an elemental force than a person (and his origin probably has something to do with that) even when compared to Death himself. With wanting nothing less the absolute annihilation of all life and giving no quarter or villainous speeches in the meantime; the Lich is undoubtedly the most serious character of the show (and the biggest threat because of it).

The Lich is death, but unlike Death he is of the mortal world. A mortal who is immortal. An immortal who brings the end result of mortality to bear, yet is known to promise, if in passing, everlasting life when it suits him.

If circumstances were slightly different, a story in which she falls under his influence (keyword) would be interesting. I am of course aware that P.B has already been possessed in one encounter and also wears a crown of power that prevents mind control. It also strikes me that as obsessive as P.B is she would never listen to anything the Lich would say, making a story like this rather hard to fathom in canon.

With that disclaimer out of the way, I would like a story of P.B becoming radically corrupted in her search for immortality. Perhaps after extensive experimentation on a fragment of the Lich, having it slowly exploit her curiosity with mental suggestion until she driven to do something that, from her and perhaps even our perspective, isn’t really all that different from her past endeavors. I can see her there, a dark cloud over the candy kingdom as odd experiments wander the streets. Finn and Jake arrive armed and demanding answers. Never looking up, she intently concentrates on her work as a massive and horrible candy amalgamation rises to meet them in combat.

She goes into a monologue: “Where is the soul? Is it in my heart? Is it somewhere beyond? Do two headed people have two souls or just one? What about twins? What about clones? Do my cells have individual souls or am I just one? If I lose a hand have I lost part of my soul? Is my brain more important in that equation? If I take the organs of one person and put it in another, are there now two souls in one body? If I make a body out of multiple people are there multiple souls? Fragments of their souls? Just one new soul? Is it a congealed one or does it come from somewhere else? Perhaps it is percentage based…You ask me what I am doing Finn? I’m answering the hard questions.”

Oh yes, under the right circumstance I could see her and him; with pale skin, corrupted clothing, a rusted crown, and eyes now possessing the faint glow of foul power. He is the one with all the answers, the one with an intellect to match her own, the one that will share the secret to everlasting life.
