Description Hesobahn of the Dhuriiehm.Β

Available as an print .

Done for a workshop in issue 33 of ImagineFX magazine.

Had a lot of little breakthroughs while painting this...actually, most of my recent work has been full of little breakthroughs. It's a good feeling, even though it reminds me how stupid I still am.

Photoshop & Painter. Thanks for looking.

I would love to express everything i have in mind while looking at this painting, but unfortunatlyΒ  my english is not good enough. But i wnat to say, that this painting touches me emotionally. The pose, the colors and the whole composition are well placed and let the viewer think about this character. The character appears somehow strong but at the same time so vunerable to me. Hope you dont mind me asking if this was intended or if i see something that is not there. Anyway, i love this painting.

Navate, what type of material do you imagine her leggings, halter and mask are made of? If you don't mind my asking.

I love this. There really aren't enough female hunters depicted so wonderfully. I love that she isn't wearing a thong and her face is covered. The spear is great too because most people think of hunters as only using bows and arrows. Very beautiful.

The blood trail, the blood running off her hands, legs, and lower garment, the mostly dead backround, makes me wonder what she was hunting and how she killed it. If I'm not mistaken she also has blood on her bra (if you can call it a bra) and her mask. Makes me also wonder why there isn't any blood on the wooden part of the spear that I can make out. The solemn gesture and look of her as she seems to walk away from her kill gives me the impression of a seasoned warrior who just made a sort of almost ritualistic kill. I imagine it's a little ritualistic for her anyways. All around I think it's really good, nice detailing, nice concept (is a sucker for blood), nice work. By the way, is that avian like tatoo supposed to say anything underneath it or are those just some sort of markings?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

navate In reply to Icarious [2008-08-07 10:37:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the thought out comment. The tattoo is the seal/mark of the Dhuriiehm, the order she is part of. The smaller markings underneath say "Hesobahn" (her name) in the alphabet system I've developed for the culture.

Woah, fucking awesome. The skin is super perfect and so is the clothing actually. Or basically everything.
Only minor point of criticism is that the arm should have been a little longer, I think. Just put your on elbow to your side, it reaches just about your hips, right?

Do you use reference for this, or are you really awesome enough to do this without any help? I always wonder about that when I see super realistic drawings like these.

navate In reply to Utsukushii-sama [2008-08-06 22:15:29 +0000 UTC]

My use of reference varies. The figure in this one was pulled from one main photo, but often I use many photos mentally pieced together, sometimes over a dozen separate sources for one pose (I did that in my most recent work, 'Nhaiuusah'. But in any case, when I use refs I try to actually -reference- them rather than simply copy them.

i really admire how the skin looks SO real. it's fantastic. where is she hunting? it's a wasteland! maybe someone should point him in the way of the fluffy green forests with big lakes Anyway it's a well done picture, it looks really realistic.

I love the piece. Everything fits perfectly: the barren landscape versus the organic design of the clothes, the pose (I think she's a bit tired, but also concentrated, focused in her resolution to kill) and the general sense of anticipation. I can't avoid to look the bloodstains on the ground, like trying to help her with the search.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

navate In reply to kittrose [2008-07-24 12:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Of course I use references. It's be a waste of time not to. What I do is take photos of myself in the basic pose I need. Sometimes that's enough, but most of the time I look at lots of outside photos too while I work to help me refine everything properly.

Coincidentally I only just got around to reading this issue today, your article was one of the last things I read before my train arrived.

It makes me feel cold just looking at it. Had I been wandering through the woods I'd have run in the opposite direction. It's definitely a great image.

Okay, WOW. This is fantastically realized. Creatively executed with the colors and composition, love the overall tone you shot for and how well you succeeded at it. The pose and its flowing sense of energy is great, not a striking dynamic pose but the kind of subtlety that's far more real and organic. And the clothing design, as usual, is amazing, giving the viewer a sense of texture yet a softened beauty that lends to the lovely soft, slow vibe of the work overall.

You've outdone yourself, I think. Great job!

I was showing off your work to my boyfriend recently, after we had a discussion about how low the quality of most art is on dA and how I only watch people who restore my faith in true art.

I only wish this had have been submitted when he was here because I know he'd love it as much as I do! (oh and he loved the rest of your gallery as well)
