Likes: Swords, daggers, sparring, being independent, wide open spaces, art
Dislikes: Templars, her fellow Assassins (to an extent), being bossed around/authority figures in general, being called “Fina”
Personality:
Foul-tempered: Serafina often comes across as cold, anti-social, and mean; in general, a real puttana. She is quick to anger and frequently takes offense to just about anything. She makes it very clear that she’s not out to make friends, going so far as to treat her own allies with disdain.
Reckless: Her hot temper tends to get her into some dangerous situations, but she seems to prefer it that way. Her irresponsible behavior boarders on masochistic; the greater the chance of danger and harm, the more fired up she becomes.
Tomboy: She acts in a much more masculine manner than what befits her. She can be grumpy and foul, prefers pants to dresses, and can curse on par with her male peers. However she avoids drinking; she is a very moody drunk and has a tendency to cry and babble when intoxicated.
Ambidextrous: Though less a facet of her personality and more of a skill, Serafina is comfortable using either her left or right hand for combat purposes, though she tends to write with her right hand more often.
Loner: Serafina prefers to operate alone. She will undertake missions alone, refusing help whenever it is offered. She also avoids assisting her allies whenever possible, only stepping in when it means a life could be lost (or if it gives her the opportunity to kill another Templar). When she does aid her allies, she will often chastise and accost them for being too weak or incompetent to handle things themselves.
Fiercely loyal: Once someone has won Serafina’s trust (which isn’t an easy feat by any means), she will remain steadfastly loyal – though she still tends to outwardly behave in the same cold manner as usual.
Biography:
What is universally known:
She shares as little personal information with others, so very few individuals know exactly how she came to join the order or what motivates her behavior.
The story from the beginning:
Serafina’s father was once a mercenary who settled down when he met her mother, choosing to rent some land in Tuscany and live as a farmer. He was a burly man who regaled his wife and daughter with tales of his adventures throughout Europe—and Serafina revered and adored him without limit. She took on the role of a son more than a daughter when her parents failed to conceive more children; she wrestled with local boys, helped work the fields with her father, played with swords and axes, and thoroughly enjoyed getting dirty, sweaty, and filthy.
When Serafina was only eight, her father succumbed to illness. He was bedridden for seven agonizing months before finally passing away. During that time and after, Serafina and her mother tried their best to maintain the farm and continue paying rent to their landlord, but without the patriarch’s strength they suffered several poor crop yields and the family fell deep into debt.
Serafina’s mother met her second husband when Serafina was ten. He was a wealthy trader from Rome who happened to be visiting Tuscany on business when a chance encounter with her mother left him love-struck. He wooed her mother, paid off her family’s debt, and moved them to Rome after a whirlwind marriage. Serafina, who still missed her father deeply, was against the whole arrangement. She felt hatred towards her new stepfather, and a deep sense of betrayal by her mother.
But as much as she tried to hate him, he was a good man to her and her mother. He gave her mother a second child—a son—and he gave Serafina an education in language, math, reading, writing, and the arts. In an attempt to appease her and keep the spirit of her father alive, he also hired combat specialists to teach and train her in fencing, hand-to-hand combat, and mixed weaponry use. Even still, she would often treat her new father coldly and would separate herself from her mother and half-brother, instead devoting most of her time to her trainers.
Her stepfather was fond of the arts and would frequently hire painters to craft portraits of his family, though Serafina was often absent and refused to be painted. One day he invited a young man into their home to paint—an aspiring artist with Assassin ties by the name of Matteo Passerini. He deflected her cold temperament with a disarming sense of humor, quick wit, and carefree attitude. Their relationship quickly blossomed from playful teasing to adoration and love. He treated her as her muse, and with him Serafina’s hard edges softened and she began to appreciate life more.
Matteo was an ally of the Assassins, operating as a double-agent. He came to know several Templars quite well, befriending them and working into their fold as an ally. He would then relay information back to his true allies, often using his paintings as a means of communicating messages. This life was kept completely secret from Serafina, even as they became lovers. However, after Matteo leaked detailed plans of coordinated Templar movements, suspicion began to mount against him and his cover became compromised. He went into hiding for several weeks before re-emerging for a risky rendezvous with Serafina, where he proposed they run away together.
Their plans were thwarted however when they were ambushed by a band of Templar agents. Matteo was brutally murdered and Serafina was left grievously wounded, assumed dead. Matteo’s Assassin allies came to his aid too late, but discovered Serafina—wounded, though alive—and delivered her to an Assassin hideout for medical treatment. She was unconscious for several days, but once recovered enough she declared a ceaseless hatred for the Templars and all they represented before bull-horning her way into the Assassin order. She saw joining the Assassins as a means of obtaining her revenge; she would be able to hunt down the ones that murdered her true love and make them suffer for taking the light from her world.
Random Tidbits:
She holds Matteo’s allies within the Assassin order partially responsible for Matteo’s death, so she acts bitter and often angry towards her fellow assassins, even if they weren’t directly involved.
She was unable to save Matteo when they were attacked, which gives her another reason to work alone so she doesn’t have to bear the same guilt twice.
She struggles to keep time from dulling her hatred and sorrow, which is why she is prone to violent outbursts and maintains her rotten attitude. So long as she has a reason to be angry and hate something she can direct that fury toward the Templars.
Serafina keeps close tabs on her family, but has severed direct contact with them. For their safety, she has assumed the role of a dead daughter. The only time she risked speaking with them directly was just after she was accepted into the assassin order. She only told them that she was alive and well, but that they should never seek her out to avoid endangering them. She is content to protect them from a distance.
She dislikes being called “Fina” because it was Matteo’s favorite nickname for her.
