Really nice coloring!
By the way, I noticed that cell shading was mentioned in the comments below. According to what I read several weeks ago, cell shading requires you do have a 3D model of a character, so you can see where is light and where shadow. I am starting to think that that's not true, but since I am not sure I would like to ask you.

Could you please tell me everything (or anything) about cell shading, so I can understand it properly? I would be really grateful.

Thank you very much!!!

Oh, you make a very good point there! Technically, you're right in saying that you need a 3D model for cel shading. I don't know too much about cel shading, but I remember reading that it is a type of rendering that enables a model to look as if it has been hand drawn or is from a comic book/cartoon.
...So, I'm really not sure if "cel shading" is the correct term to use for a 2D image...but, after all, the cel shading style was inspired by the way that artists painted on acetate sheets for 2D animation....

Sorry if I haven't been much help. ...By the way, you've got me very interested in this now!! I must research and feed my curiosity!

Thank you very much for the response! Seems like there is still a lot about shading I don't know. It seems scary a bit~ I wonder if only certain people are able to realize where to put shades on a character without a 3D model. I can't get that >skill< (skill of seeing and understanding where to put shadows/light) no matter what.

Did you learn to shade from books or someone, or were you "just born with that skill"?

Namiiru In reply to StarklyIce [2012-12-18 21:41:46 +0000 UTC]

Aww, you are very welcome!
Same with me! I always worry about where to put the shading...and then wonder how people do it so brilliantly. I guess it's all about imagining light sources and studying the world around us for an understanding of lighting. It's still something I am forcing myself to work on - I'm terrible with lighting.

...Oh! Umm...well, I didn't think I was any good at it! To be honest, I've not studied shading from books or anything like that, just from looking at things around me (and often myself in the mirror). For this Zoro image, I just made up where to put the shading...keeping in mind that a highlight will bring about some shadow on the opposite side. I'm sorry if I am terrible at explaining this...

If you really think that you are bad at it (when you actually seem to do it really well), then I might just stand a chance at being as good as you some day! Keep on, you are going in the right way~

Awwwww! Thank you ever so much for your kind words!

Hold on a second...I've just taken a look at your gallery and I really am impressed!! You shade so well!! Seriously! And vector art is something I have always wanted to do. AND DIGIMON!!!!!! It was my childhood.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

StarklyIce In reply to Namiiru [2012-12-18 21:59:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your kind words! Sadly, that shading "doesn't belong to me". I just took references and copied exactly what I saw +_+; So I simply copied the shading as well. Although I WISH I could do shading like that without references XD.

My purpose with those vectors I have in my gallery was to recreate pictures of poor quality to a great quality. Although I wish I could draw something by myself and vectorize that *_*~~

I am really glad that you've seen digimon! In case you watched the american dub version (foxkids), I really suggest you to watch the japanese version (the emotions are really strong!). I really adore digimon and would like to make that wallpaper I have in mind! ^_^;;

Gotta learn to draw first haha!

Namiiru In reply to StarklyIce [2012-12-18 22:30:28 +0000 UTC]

Aww, don't worry about it. "Copying" by using references is part of developing as an artist, I believe. Anyway, I'm sure that you'll be able to create shading like that without references in no time.

Awesome! There really isn't enough awesome quality Digimon vectors here.

Hehe!! Me too! I wouldn't be as I am now if it weren't for Digimon. It inspired me to begin drawing seriously. I started to watch the Japanese version, but I became very busy with school work. I hope I can return to it soon.

Good luck!

Ooo Digimon anime was an inspiration to you..! That's really cool~! Not many people appreciate this great anime.

I really appreciate your kindness, it gives me hope that one day I will be able to express myself artistically. I need to practice, practice and practice, but since I really want to be able to express myself right now, it's really hard to have patience. I wish I could go back in time and yell at myself to draw, draw, drawwww.

It's hard, but people like you make it seem less hard and more enjoyable. ^^

Nice colouring. I watched maybe 8 eps of One piece and stopped, it didn't catch me. Also I heard it has 500+ eps and that it is about in half.

Haha, really? It's not everyone's cup of tea. And it has reached 571 episodes I believe. I'm trying to collect the manga, but I've only made it to volume 25 out of 67 (I think).

Ooh, two languages?! I'm incredibly impressed!!! I really want to be able to understand and converse in another language, so I am in awe of anyone who can do so! I've been trying my hardest to learn Japanese through the internet. It's taking a lot of time, but I'm pretty happy with my progress so far.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pralinkova-princezna In reply to Namiiru [2012-10-14 11:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Czech is my mother language, English second. I know German to some extent too, rather passively.
I saw you talk in Japanese before, I envy you a little, I wanted too but I didn't get far with my self study. I only understand a few words.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Namiiru In reply to pralinkova-princezna [2012-10-16 18:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Now that's really impressive. You speak English far better than some English people I know...believe me!!!
Are you still interested in learning Japanese?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pralinkova-princezna In reply to Namiiru [2012-10-16 18:17:36 +0000 UTC]

You are not the first who says that, hehe. I studied it at university.
Kinda. I'm not motivated enough. If I really wanted, I could attend a course or self study, but I don't really need it. Why?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Namiiru In reply to pralinkova-princezna [2012-10-17 18:27:23 +0000 UTC]

Wow. I'm still incredibly impressed!!!
Oh, no reason. I was just wondering.

pralinkova-princezna In reply to Namiiru [2012-10-17 18:32:00 +0000 UTC]

IMO languages can be sufficiently learned only when the learner actively wants. No school will pour it into you. I realized as a kid I studied other English textbooks than our class learned from, only for the fun of it, also played computer games in Eng. and now I have friends all over the world online so I talk in English more than in my native language.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Namiiru In reply to pralinkova-princezna [2012-10-17 18:48:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much for that. Some people in my school want to learn Japanese too, but they are not motivated nor willing to put in the effort to do so. I guess the only reason I have reached my current level in my study is because I am so motivated to speak Japanese well. I try my hardest to communicate with Japanese people in their native language, and I am incredibly grateful for the times when I make mistakes and they correct me. I listen to Japanese music and watch anime as much as possible, and I am now trying to read small samples of Japanese text in order to become familiar with difficult Kanji. I wouldn't bother if I didn't enjoy studying the language.

You've probably seen me type something like this before:
ใ€Œๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชžใฎๅ‹‰ๅผทใ‚’ๆฑบใ—ใฆ่ซฆใ‚ใชใ„ใงใ™ใ‚ˆ๏ผใ€
It basically sums up my motivation for learning the beautiful language that is Nihongo.

pralinkova-princezna In reply to Namiiru [2012-10-17 19:06:09 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. Only what you enjoy you can be really good at. I favour alternative education programs, homeschooling and unschooling ideas. I don't have very good memories of my school years, only that it was a great nuisance.
....desu yo XD maybe. I can't read kana.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Namiiru In reply to pralinkova-princezna [2012-10-17 19:11:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm really glad that someone else considers their school years to be a nuisance. Even my Mum cannot wait for me to leave school and go to college. We were having a conversation the other day about how school has brought me so many troubles and so much stress...
Hehe!!! "desu yo" is correct!!! If you're interested, I wrote "Nihongo no benkyou wo kesshite akiramenaidesu yo!". It roughly translates to "I'll never give up studying Japanese".

I wrote an article about unschooling, or rather it is a criticism of the current dysfunctional schooling system. [link]

That's the spirit, if you enjoy it, that's cool!
