Description The file says it all (The ability to not really edit comments, but to add an addendum. This avoids people trolling and then editing comments to appear innocent, but if you need to clarify something, you can add it to the original comment (including forum posts), rather than having to post it in a new comment to get lost among many other replies.)

Right now, the pencil icon only shows up on areas you own or are allowed to edit (your page, group backrooms you have privs for, etc). For this, it'd be displayed on all your comments and replies.

I left this as a comment on #hq 's blog about forum and chats, but it should happen site wide

If you'd like to add something or make a suggestion for an alteration, please let me know
Good point from =TimberClipse ; "What if it could be edited right up until someone else comments on your post?" [link]
I think that would work as well a problem with that, I think, would be that often you might not realise that you weren't clear enough until someone replied to it.
Question from =SanguineEpitaph ; "Would editing the comment make it re-show up in someone's inbox?" [link]
I'd say, no. If the person has the comment or reply in their message center still, then that would be updated too (so they see the updated version in their message center rather than the old one). But it wouldn't need to send the comment again.
Good ideas from =oblivion00 [link]
I think a nested box (basically, just slap a border on a paragraph) would be the most noticeable, placed above the user's signature. The alternate option is stickying comments--for instance, if I make a thumbshare thread and want to close it, I'll leave a comment at the end--if I could press a button to have this appear directly below the original post, that would work somewhat like an addendum."
Good point by `SaTaNiA ; if you edit it several times it can get very messy. [link] So I'd suggest to limit it to one edit, or two at most

Submitting to scraps and then moving to the real gallery Don't want to see those things? Unwatch my scraps
Thanks to #DeviantARTconcept for requesting to add this to their gallery

I don't know, that's their call

That's a very recent thing, of course, but editing comments has been around on other platforms for a long time

I also think devient art needs some type of edit option for the comments. I just left a comment and relised that I used the wrong word. My comment would have made more sense if I could have fixed it rather than simply adding a reply to make a note of my error.

VSConcepts [2011-05-09 23:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Hrm. I would love this to help clarify something said, or when apologizing for some diarrhea of the mouth I previously umm. "spouted"... The tool could be used for good AND evil though. I do know that deviantART LOVES its posterity, which is why even though WE can't see or access them, our profiles are NEVER removed entirely from the data machines under the control of the omnipotent Fella. Having something potentially "erased" would not work out, and "Adendums" added "inside" the original comment would likely go unnoticed, particularly when people use so many different sizes and font faces in their Sigs and Comments.

BUT, If the "edit" appeared "attached" to the bottom of the comment but in a darker color, that might work. Like instead of the light green, if it were a darker green with lighter text.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to VSConcepts [2011-05-10 14:41:50 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I understand what you mean by it might go unnoticed. How could it be used for evil though? I don't quite get that part.

Thanks for the feedback!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VSConcepts In reply to namenotrequired [2011-05-10 14:57:31 +0000 UTC]

Used for evil, because depending on how the feature was implemented, you'd have a never-ending stream of "changing story". If it were closely done to how you described it, then probably no evil. But just a little change to make it more attractive to the viewer could also open up a can of worms. Minor concern I think. Biggest thing would how to make it pleasing to look at - AND noticeable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to VSConcepts [2011-05-10 15:08:11 +0000 UTC]

I... don't really understand how you mean You mean just too many edits happening to one comment?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VSConcepts In reply to namenotrequired [2011-05-10 15:29:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and the potential to say something "bad", and then retract it later. Depends if it's an addendum to the original, or if it's an over-write, like if you update a journal without creating a "new one".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to VSConcepts [2011-05-10 15:38:09 +0000 UTC]

Like I said the editing would be limited to one or two at the most so that wouldn't be a problem

And yeah, the point of the suggestion is that it is an addendum within but keeps the original intact so the most you can do to retract it is say "I didn't mean it like that" or something.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VSConcepts In reply to namenotrequired [2011-05-10 16:00:05 +0000 UTC]

In the past we had a FAQ entry about this suggestion but I don't know why they deleted them In this entry they listed some features which will never found in dA.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to shftfrm [2011-05-09 15:05:08 +0000 UTC]

I know, the suggestions forum sticky still lists it and links to it

But this is a suggestion for how it could be done while avoiding the disadvantages as much as possible. You never know, eh?

Thank you for the info anyway

I love you (change moments ago) (this is the previous comment)

That's why i'm not for those kind of things on dA ...
Even if I would love to have those kind of thing to correct all the typos i can make in one day ...
I thinks there's too much troll only for letting those kind of thing appear on dA

namenotrequired In reply to SaTaNiA [2011-05-09 13:51:30 +0000 UTC]

That's why I made this suggestion, since it offers a solution to that problem Or do you think it wouldn't?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SaTaNiA In reply to namenotrequired [2011-05-09 13:56:35 +0000 UTC]

don't know but I don't think so
That would really mess up the comments and we would be forced to read really really carefully to understand a sentence
When i'm doing typos or when i've forgot something i'm used to repost a comment.
That's why i don't know

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to SaTaNiA [2011-05-09 14:19:53 +0000 UTC]

Why would it force you to read so carefully?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SaTaNiA In reply to namenotrequired [2011-05-09 15:23:53 +0000 UTC]

Because if you edit 3 - 4 time a comments or such things it can be messy isn't it ?

namenotrequired In reply to SaTaNiA [2011-05-09 15:40:28 +0000 UTC]

True, I hadn't thought about editing it several times What if it's limited to once?
