Description This doesn't always work. It relies on a bug in dA and is not officially supported.

27/08/12 Update

Now transparent - which means it can also be used on widgets with background images, other colours etc.
I believe it should work for non-premium members now (let me know if I'm wrong)
Were you already using it? You may want to replace it if any of these are an issue for you.
/update

What is this?
Custom boxes and other widgets you put text in usually have a max width of 400px. But with this resource, you can increase the width of the usable space as much as you want! Put more text, thumbs or whatever you want in it!

The code

How to use this?
1. Copy code above.

2. Paste it to the top or bottom* of the text area you want it in.

3. Change the number in the width="450" part to the width you want to have.

4. Faving it would be nice - the more people can use this, the better, right? And of course you may want to refer back to it in the future too.

How wide shall I put it?
400 px is the default width. So you'll want to put something larger than this. In my opinion 600 is the max if you want it to be properly visible on most modern normal screens. So 450, 500, 550 or 600 are probably most recommendable - but you can set it any integer value in between those too (like 479, but not 479,294093028)

Where can I use it?
You can use it in the text of the following widgets: featured deviation, favourites, custom, wishlist, gallery folder, collection, critiques, delicious bookmarks, my prints, featured print, donate points, and devID (old style).
*edit* reportedly this doesn't work in combination with OpenDNS or Google DNS.

Have fun customising!
You can find more customisation for your page on CommanderLuminaire .

Some alternatives:

Thanks to DazzlingDecorations , DeviantARTconcept , dAtn and demo-s for requesting to submit this to their gallery

*You can put it somewhere in the middle too, but keep in mind it'll put some extra space in between the top and bottom then.

I'm posting for the benefit of my fellow deviants who are frustrated about our wider widgets bug being "fixed" in one of dA's recent updates. Add a scrollbar to your custom box here  and add

right before your text area box to add some space to each side. If you are having trouble customizing your page, feel free to send me a note or check out my page. I have just finished fixing it and am pleased with the layout. At least for now.

I made fix for it.

Just change the "500" to the desired width. I'm using it right now!

So... the only difference is the align="right", correct?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IceXDragon In reply to namenotrequired [2013-12-12 19:54:33 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I tried it with "center" too and it comes up with the exact same result.

Was the original exactly the same besides the link and align?

namenotrequired In reply to IceXDragon [2014-01-17 23:42:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, I forget what the old code was exactly.

What a difference this has made in my widgets! I've changed the width to 500 or 550 pixels and it really saves space on my profile page, as well as keeping the margins from looking so wide! Thank you so much for creating this

I have been having a lovely time fixing my widgets on my sites

When I have a widget that is really long, and I use a picture from my PhotoBucket that is usually used for a CSS background, is there a way to have it repeat so the bottom half of the widget isn't blank? Take a look at =WDWParksGal-Stock and the widget under my ID is the one I'm referrring to. Also, is there a way to change the font color in a widget code? Thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to WDWParksGal [2013-10-13 06:56:02 +0000 UTC]

As far as I know the only way to do so is to edit the image itself. I believe you can't have it repeat, or change the font colours. (It's been suggested but it looks like a bad idea to me...)

WDWParksGal In reply to namenotrequired [2013-10-13 22:07:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Guess I'll have to figure out just how long to make the background. Since I made so many backgrounds for CSS backgrounds, knew that most would fit a standard journal or would repeat if the journal was long. Doesn't quite work like that for the widgets. Guess I will have to make sure the background will allow the black print to show for the text, or the blue that is used for a live link.

Do you know what the original width of widgets are?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to cevourii [2013-09-19 20:26:55 +0000 UTC]

It seems to me that the content is by itself around 300px wide

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cevourii In reply to namenotrequired [2013-09-19 20:34:18 +0000 UTC]

Well not the content but the width of the whole original box?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namenotrequired In reply to cevourii [2013-09-19 20:59:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that depends on the window size. It's a little less than half the width of the window.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cevourii In reply to namenotrequired [2013-09-19 21:16:02 +0000 UTC]
