I think about Tidus a lot, perhaps strangely. For whatever reasons, he gets no respect or appreciation either from his companions in the game or from fandom in general. He's almost always depicted as being witless or being the butt of some abuse or another in fanart, and he gets more than his share in the game, too. From his childhood, where he was ignored by his mother and verbally abused by his father, to his caretaker Auron (who's not much better than Jecht), to his traveling companions in Spira who have barely a tolerant word for the kid who just had his world totally shattered. Only one person...Yuna, of course... seems to take his feelings on anything into account. Wakka isn't too bad, but his lack of comprehension doesn't help matters.And yet, he can't do anything about it. If he expresses his upset, he's a 'crybaby', and thus subject to even more ridicule. I can tell you right now, if I was in his place, I wouldn't be in nearly such good shape. And yet, through everything, from the destruction of his home, to weathering the slings and arrows of those around him, to finally realizing that he has the choice of -living- or saving the world and the girl he loves... he addresses all of it with a grin and the determination to make sure 'everything will be okay'. Still, when he's alone, I can't imagine that the cocky smile doesn't fade, and the tears come.
Silent, of course, so no one can hear.

Wha, no?! *hugs Tidus* This is my all time favorite Final Fantasy character ever! In FFX, after I killed Yu Yevon the Giant Tick, I seriously pulled the plug on the game so I wouldn't have to watch him die (I saw the ending on Youtube, but hey, it wasn't MY Tidus in MY game, so yeah). In the first Dissidia, I had a Lv. 100 Tidus that mauled everything in Story Mode except that Lv. 110 Chaos (grr...) and I transferred him to Dissidia 012, where he's pretty much remained my primary fighter. So many memories...Poor Tidus...

I never understood why every bashes him so much. I mean, look at what we know
He was verbally abused by his father and it is possible that Jecht actually physically harmed him (accidently)on the rare occassion he tried to teach him blitzball (Jehct doesn't strike me as the sort to realize you have to take it easy on little kids). The rest of the time, it's implied that he was neglected. Then, his father dissapperes and his mother just lets herself die, not even caring that she had a son who needed her. Yeah, that's wonderful parenting. That alone should have him fairly depressed and non-cheerful.
Then Auron comes into his life and watches out for him, but only because he promised Jecht. I don't know if Tidus knew this or not, but given that Tidus was a kid that had been deprived of any expression of love and affection for as long as he can remember, Auron probably wasn't the best person to raise him. Protect, hell yeah, anyone messing with Tidus would be in trouble but act as a parent, not really, not by himself.
SO first there is the neglectful/emotionally abusive, drunkard father and the neglectful mother who doesn't even care about her kid, then the cold, distant guy who watches out from him because of a promise to the father. YEah, a kid coming for that situation would be really well-adapted and cheerful -rolls eyes-
Then he becomes a blitzball player like his father, maybe to try and best him in something and to prove to himself that his father's constant insults didn't mean anything only to constantly be faced with the whole "Our hero, Jecht" thing on a constant basis with everyone praising the man who emotionally abused him.
Then he gets thrown into Spira. Everything he knows doesn't apply anymore. He knows NOTHING about this place. I'm pretty surethat few, if any would have coped as well as he did. He meets Rikku, starts to make friends with her before SIN shows up again and gets separated from he Al Bheds and doesn't even know if they survived.
Then he winds up in Besaid where pretty much everyone insults him simply because he wanted to help someone who sounded like she was in trouble (Yuna) rather than sit around and whine about how she might be dead or something. And the only people who are nice to him are Yuna (who, if you ask me, seems more interested in Zanarkand at first) and Wakka (who happens to have a dead brother Tidus resembles. Some people reckon Wakka was hoping was Tidus WAS Chappu and just had his memories messed up).
Exactly how he coped, I have no idea, let alone how he manged to smile and show the world a happy face.
Then we add in the how dream of the fayth thing. You know, where Tidus is in a "you can either kill Sin for good, save the world and stop existing or you can live and let Sin continue to kill people with breaks in the Calm" thing. So, basically, his whole life purpose was to DIE for a world that he didn't belong in.
I'm amazed he didn't have a emotional breakdown. So why is he bashed so much?
Is it because of his English voice actor. I've heard it's whiny although I don't think it is. Trust me, I have heard some really whiny voices and there is no way Tidus' can be called whiny.

I Just love how you gave him that sad expression.. it's because tidus is always so cheery that this drawing is even more emotional than when he just smiles..
from the very beginning I've always loved tidus the most in the final fantasy games, and of course i've drawn him many times myself because of that reason!! i can't understand that so much people don't like him?

Finally someone shares my opinion about Tidus! What is he supposed to do? Having your home destroyed and then being shoved off into another time period isn't exactly the smallest of circumstances to endure, not to mention his previous family life.. I hate it when people say he's just being a crybaby, because I'd like to see how they'd react in the same situation. I think it makes him more real.
As for the picture, very lovely. You captured what you intended to capture, and I think you brought an unseen side of Tidus which is quite real.

Exactly my thoughts. I had some senseless discussions with my friend (who is a big Auron and Jecht fan) about this, and it's nice to know that someone shares my opinion.

I never thought of it that way before. I didn't regonise him at first just by the fact that he wasn't smiling. I can't imagine what tidus (Of coarse if he was real and I know his not) was thinking or feeling when he was taken out of his world of being loved by thousands of people and being famous to being nothing in a world he knows nothing about. Not forgetting all that stuff at the beggning when the Al Bhed find him and treat him like dirt. I think yuna is the only on that shows him compassion but rikku is always cheering him up.
LuLu lived in the real world (Well in their real world) she is blunt and to the point. She has been hurt once too many times to care.

I always liked his character and thought that he handled his situation very well. I don't think he's as disrespected as you're saying, at least in the game. You can tell through the story that Rikku also really likes him, and Lulu's respect for him grows over time. Kimahri... doesn't say much, lol. And Auron really is concerned about his safety, but Auron just tends to be cold in general and doesn't express it. I do, though, agree with you that he doesn't get much respect outside of the game. People see him as an arrogant jock who's a wuss, crybaby, etc.

*nod* very astute, nacht. He doesn't get very much respect, due to being a 'child' to the rest, really. And Auron always seems...distant. duh, but more of less of a preoccupation that doesn't allow any excess feeling. Then again, if you think of it from the other's point of view, there's this strange crazy kid who claimes he's from the past--and spiran's are always...well..they don't like change. So i think they'd shun the things that are different, ne?
okay, i'm gonna stop rambling and comment on the pic. ARgh. love yer shading and all--it's so...smooth. and soft and delineated. arg--no fair!!
