I really like the haziness of the whole drawing from the charcoal and I can see from your other work that you draw stranger stuff as well. In comparison, this is a little less surreal but I think that if you add a touch of surrealism it would improve. It also feels a little similar to other landscape art that I have seen and it's somewhat Bob Ross-esque, but the general mood is much more melancholy thanks to the use of charcoal instead of brightly coloured paints, which I find good in a picture. I like the washed-out mountain in the background which gives the drawing a sense of mystery and gives a sharp contrast with the darker trees in the foreground.

Overall, this is a nice drawing, and to improve try and make it seem more strange and surreal, but keep the hauntingness of the dark pastels and charcoal.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked this piece
I'll try to make more unique landscapes in the future - charcoals will surely help me for the task

I guess that, depending on your mood, you can see either sun rays or rain

Wow you're right! Originally my eyes were drawn to the light tones seeing sun rays but now you mention it, looking at the piece again, it reminds me of the onset of a rain storm with the cool breeze and rain settling in and the day turning dark.Β

I realized this when I showed this to my mother xD I saw sun rays, while she saw rain.
Now I can't unsee both versions!

Myrieen In reply to Jasen00 [2017-01-15 16:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Myrieen In reply to Jasen00 [2017-01-15 18:35:20 +0000 UTC]

Not going to do a critique, I find it hard as an artist to critique other artists... but, if it was my piece, I would be really pleased with it so far. I believe it needs a little more definition, lean on the charcoal a bit more. Make it a little, I mean just a little darker at the horizon, a bit around the hill at the front and a little lighter around the mountain tops. Even add just a hint of colour at the intersection with the road. Draw people in. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the tips!
I'll try to improve in my charcoal skills, I recently discovered this wonderful tool and still need to get used to the different grip

Emociones-Oscuras In reply to Myrieen [2017-01-07 20:53:06 +0000 UTC]

My pleasure. I have only tried charcoal a few times (GoldenKestrel, where most of my line art, conceptual work is), like any medium it takes time and practice.
It does give some great effects when you get used to it.
I think I said I hate giving critiques, but (spent seven years studying technical drawing and art, between 13 and 20... much, much older now) you want to ask anything, feel free.

I'm mostly a self-taght artist, so thank you for your help!
Sure, here in Italy we have to study technical drawing and art (along with history of art) too beetween 11 and 18 years old almost in every school but... sometimes these subjects are not very well taught.

For now I'll be taking these advices of yours and try them in the next landscape I'll make
It's my fourth-fifth time I tried charcoals, but it's like encountering a very old and familiar friend. Really enjoying the tool so far
