I wrote a tool to let me download thousands of Pinkie Pie images from DeviantArt automatically, so I spent the last week or so just manually cropping a bunch of images that it found (I was able to add about 600 or so, because I only work on that when I'm not doing anything else, like sitting in traffic or walking to work) so I've noticed that the results improved by a noticeable amount, but not quite as much as I had hoped. I'm trying to make a custom image recognition tool so that I could just crop all of the images automatically, but I'm using a library called TensorFlow, which isn't particularly user-friendly when it comes to customizing things, so I'm getting errors left and right. I'll probably have to use opencv instead, which isn't my preferred choice, but it may be easier to work with. None of you probably had any idea what I just said in those last two sentences, but that's okay.
