Description And here it wasn't so long ago that I was castigating some poor chap in the photographers chatroom about blowing highlights... Guess you have to know and understand the rules before you can break them (not that I do or course!)

dog + completely blown highlights.

Since I have had so many questions about the original photo, here it is...

Wow. Personally I would've preferred the nose to be in focus too, but it does lend the eyes a certain 'op'.
Man, those blown highlights. You've come far!

MSJames In reply to withoutspace [2008-12-17 13:17:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind words here and I'm glad you feel I have progressed somewhat.

Yeah, I was torn with the nose thing too, but I think it leads the eye more towards the eyes of the dog, which was the real focus of the photo.

Thanks for your opinion though, I do value it highly

He would blend perfectly in the snow up here

MSJames In reply to VisualPoetress [2008-12-16 13:25:00 +0000 UTC]

lol - well probable not, he's really a yellow dog (see link in description for the original photo), but in this form I'm sure he would. I wish we had snow :/

You're not supposed to be losing weight? That sounds odd, but good luck with that and take full advantage of that and eat like hell!

Nice potrait. Impactful. Eyes are tact sharp. Ears appear less sharp but the blur suggest movement which makes the image more interesting. Black n white/symmetry for the win!

Thanks so much for your insightful commentary on the photo. I love the way it turned out myself and if you saw the original, you'd never believe it was the same shot!

Any flash or strobes used?
Is the background just white wall?

while some of your highlights may be blown, I love this image! I actually think it works really well with the hot spots!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MSJames In reply to Twilights-Maiden [2008-12-14 20:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh it's not some, it's almost all of them (you should see the histogram!) The dog is actually a yellow dog, with a light colored hardwood floor in the background, if that tells you how blown they are

I am, however, glad you like the shot, regardless of the take on it. Thanks for your comments!

Twilights-Maiden In reply to MSJames [2008-12-14 21:38:29 +0000 UTC]

lol okay I would have never guessed he was yellow against a yellow floor lol - still love the image

MSJames In reply to Twilights-Maiden [2008-12-14 21:48:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh it's ok, that was the intent anyways Glad you still like it though, I think it is an unusual perspective on the dog.

A lovely dog and such a regal expression.
I really like the effect of the photograph, which resembles a traditional pencil sketch composition.
The eyes sharp with reflections, and the nose a little serious and softer in appearance.
A creative and unique capture.

MSJames In reply to dutchshun [2008-12-14 20:11:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much Jo! I'm glad you looked so deep into this photo. I do think she has a regal appearance as well and she's such a sweet dog too! It's the owner of the company I work for's dog and he got her from the humane society, so that makes it even more special. I'm going to give him a print of this for Christmas this year.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you liked it so much! I was quite proud of the way it turned out myself as well.
