Description
Alfred Aethelwulfson, King of Wessex. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle he was attributed to, at first, a loss at the hands of the Heathen Army, led by the viking king Guthrum. However, after regrouping in Somerset he led the Anglo-Saxons to victory at Edington. There he and Guthrum made a truce, dividing England between Anglo-Saxon and Dane. Thus England was divided between the kingdoms of Wessex and Danelaw.
From his military prowess to his love of education and God, he was an admirable king who loved his people and was a master at statecraft. He unified the Anglo-Saxons under his leadership. It was his grandson, Aethelstan, who became the first King of England. From this legacy, he is rightfully called Alfred the Great.
