Description When: March 3, 2019
Where: Texel Zoo Oosterend Texel, The Netherlands

We've already learned some of the Opossums favorite spots and we're so incredibly lucky to have gotten a good look at them the last few times we visited
They have very different faces, which is just adorable!

Species: Virginia or North American Opossum (Virginiaanse Opossum)

Latin name: Didelphis Virginiana

Originates from North America.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

…They are more often simply referred to as “Possum”, yet they were the original animals named “Opossum”, their name deriving from a Native American language calling them wapathemwa, or white animal.

….The Virginia Possum is the only marsupial found north of Mexico.

…They are most noted for having originates the phrase “playing possum”, otherwise, feigning death from experiencing extreme fear. They are conscious as they lie on their side, eyes and mouth open, tongue out, and emitting a green, putrid fluid from the anus (to discourage predators). Meanwhile, the hear rate drops by half, and breating slows wih 30%, entering a near coma that can last up to 6 hours. This doesn’t mean they are docile; when faced with a lesser threat, they can be ferocious.

…Opossums have a very short life span, growing no older than 2 years in the wild, and up to 4 years in captivity, due to having few defenses against predators and apparently no beed to adapt to ensure longer lives. Females do have 1-3 litters a year, and with 13 available teats, can carry up to as many joeys in their pouch, though they may give birth to as many as 50 babies.

The rock looks like a sponge. But overall it's a really good picture!

It's a fake rock, I believe (the hazards of photographig at a zoo) so sponge-like is pretty accurate.

Thanks

Me too!

I'd seen a lot of photos and videos of them before this zoo got a  breeding pair who had a joey Very awesome to see them, if only 1-2 times a year.

They're also notoriously great for pest control (opossumsocietyus.org/general-o… )! People don't like them because they're afraid that every other wild mammal could carry rabies, and opossums can kinda look like monster rats at first glance (it's the tails!), but they're really pretty awesome! Great photo! ❤

I did not know that They're so often talked about as if they're a pest themselves.

People are scared of animals for any reason, whether they've imagined it or not...

Opossums are so very cool though, and it's just amazing seeing a small group here They're very cute and loveable, if a bit rat-like which is okay if you like rats.

Thank you!

No problem! The first time I ever saw one up close, I remember hearing movement in the bushes just after dusk, and all I saw was the giant tail attached to some vaguely rat-shaped creature. It came out in the open, and it really took me a moment to figure out what the hell I was looking at! 😂 I was like, "That's not a rat (?) ... and it's not a beaver .......... oh God it's a 'possum!!"

He does have a very cute face

I don't have an opossum (yet) but room is like a zoo when it comes to different kinds of stuffed animals Though admittedly, a lot of them are ducks and pigs (my favorites) and foxes and mice (M's favorite).
