Description Medieval Helms 3.10 (Color)

The full view size is 600 wide, because the original size is very big, 1984x1355. So if you want to see it, please download !
And please tell me if there's wrong information!
Because I have +40 books/dictionaries of (medieval) Arms and Armor, I was able to make it (And names of country are perhaps incorrect because some information was contradicted among some books and this transition is that I thought based on those books.

This picture is one of transition of Medieval Helm based on my research.

Great Helm
Birthplace: England, late 12C
Weight: 3kg
[English name] pot helm, barrel helm, crusader helm
>Most helmets have some decorations of cross and crest.
>Some Germanic helmet have some removable decorations, for example, shuttlecocks, crown, and metalic feather.
>Because of its poor view and stifling, they changed using a Great helm to a Bascinet afterwards.
>In 14 century, affluent person wore a helmet further putting on a bascinet. That helm is called "Heaume (French)"

Jousting Helm
Weight: 7kg (becasue of safety)
>The helm for a tournament (jousting).
>It looks like a frog, it's called "Gama no Atama" ( means "toad head" ) in Japan.

Where is the Pembridge helm ??!! The transitional crusader helmet ?! The Maciejowski Bible helm ??!!

I'm sorry to say this but many of those helms are totally unhistorical ( especially the ''Greek'' one)
I don't know what are your references, but if you like real medieval armor, I suggest you to check out the armour archive website and forums [link]

Wow..that's a lot of helms. Um, yes they are indeed very stunning, especially since you painted each and everyone to get the perfect shading.I love the Roman helms and some of the french helms such that they are just so intimidating to the eyes. I enjoyed this alot, good work.

You can see some picture of transition of medieval helms
(But because I made them based on my research, perhaps there are some incorrect information. So please tell me if you find strange part )
1) Ketttle hat -> Sallet [link]
2) Bascinet -> Bicoquet [link]
3) Great Helm -> Jousting Helm (this picture)
4) Armet -> Maximilian Helm sketch version
And I'll make more picture to show the construction of Armet/Renaissance helm, Maximilian Helm.

Anyway, I wish you'll enjoy seeing them ;D

The Roman helms pictured-

When did they come into existence? Were they used by crusaders?

I'm wondering if helms like that were in existence beginning 1177 to 1187?

And have you seen Kingdom of Heaven?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

monchiken In reply to deeds619 [2009-10-07 08:42:18 +0000 UTC]

Yes, some of them use it
In fact, according to the seal of Richard I of England, he used Great Helm. So It appeared in 1189-1199 at least ^^
But according to the seal of Henry II of England (1154-1189), he didn't used it, instead he used Norman's helm. So perhaps there is no Great Helm, or they were not used by crusaders around 1177-1187.

Kingdom of Heaven? Umm...perhaps I did, but I'm sorry...I don't remember most of the content
