Description Blue & White 2007 - I was asked to do the cover of my school's yearbook for last year, which students will receive this year.

The typography is based on the works of Si Scott [link]
Some of the other graphics are based on the work of RARR112 [link]
For the brown paper background I used two paper textured from bashcorpo [link]
and the crest is my school's official crest.

Usually the student who designs the cover only does the front, then a standard light blue back and spine is put on by the printers. But I thought stuff that and demanded the full cover, which I got

I am fairly happy with the quality of the printing, the only negative is that the spine is slightly stretched out of proportion.
This is the first time I have designed a cover and didn't know how thick the spine was going to be. Does anyone have experience with cover design, and if so how is this problem of the spine width overcome?

That's great! And let's screw all that "don't judge the book by it's cover", shall we?

One thing bugs me out, though. Why "Blue and white"?

Blue and white is the name of your yearbook as those are our school colours. It's been called that since ages ago... I assume since 1931 when the school opened.

Ok first of all I HATE YOU fo being so good! That being said I love this work, it is pro and awsome!!!

For the spine ยซ~13ey0nd ยป is right but most printers today save you all the work, you tell them what paper you will be printing on the number of pages and he will tell you exactly the size you spine has to be. Talking to your printer and having a good relationship with him will always save you lots of grief and make everything work smoother.

Critique : I think I know the answer but I'll let you tell us, why isin't it blue and white????

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MolefaceNZ In reply to Awooo [2009-08-31 03:59:13 +0000 UTC]

haha... everyone always asks... "but why isn't it blue and white?"... just because it's called blue and white doesn't mean that it HAS to be in those colours. Although most of the previous versions have predominately used those colours in the design.

Oh. My. God.

This reaction requires some explanation:

My "real world" name is Matthew Adams. I grew up in New Zealand and attended St. Pats Silverstream as a boarder in the years 1986 to 1990. After finishing 7th form, I left for Denmark and have only been back to NZ a couple of times since...

I've been an avid member of deviantart for a few years now, but had never in my wildest dreams imagined I'd see anything like this on the site...

In my apartment, I've got my own collection of old Blue & Whites from 1981 to 1992 (brothers at the school both before & after me...) As the name suggests, they were just blue & white yearbooks in those days!

I don't know what format you have now, but they moved from a shorter version (either B5 or Quarto - don't have the books in front of me to check) to A4 in the 1991 yearbook. The 1991 yearbook in particular was notorious for falling apart due to a bad glue job at the seams... If I remember correctly, it was Mrs. Turner that was in charge of the printing in my years. If she's still there, give her a big hug from me - she was the loveliest, sweetest Biology teacher one could ever wish for...

I couldn't help laughing to myself when I read your remarks to the other comments: "Vectoring, Illustrator, Photoshop, Macbook, InDesign..."

In my years at the school, there was only one computer room - in a room directly above the main entrance in front of the chapel. In the cold, damn Autumn & Winter weather, frozen students that couldn't be bothered going to the library for warmth would huddle together in the computer room, waiting in turn to play on the Grande Olde computers at the time... Most were early IBM PC's, though there might have been a 1984 Macintosh lying around somewhere... There were a few great games (loaded by 8" floppy dics, of course), but there was also a few geeks trying to punch in some Basic code... A few prefects would circle the room auspiciously, booting out any 3rd formers who might find joy from writing "penis" on the screen...

There were no computer classes being taught, and the concept of using a "laptop" at an exam wasn't applicable at the time...

"Internet"? What Internet?

We can all talk about how quickly and irreversibly technology has changed in the last 20 years, but it takes a dA deviation like this to really show the progress of time. This deviation is heading straight for my favourites section, as is your 2008 version... For me this the deviation of the year, and for that I can't thank you enough.

Please also say hello to Tony O'Connor, Graeme Hydes & the wonderful Sister Frances Marie for me (& especially good old Father Mark Walls, if you run into him: we called him the "Prince of Darkness" in my time, but he's no doubt mellowed since...) . They probably don't remember me, but I sure do remember them...

Thanks again, Matthew aka PoulNyrup

MolefaceNZ In reply to PoulNyrup [2009-08-31 04:15:26 +0000 UTC]

haha wow epic comment there Matthew!

Interesting to hear from a past streamer.

Tony O'Connor and Graeme Hydes are still teaching here today. While Sister Frances Marie lives in the home of compassion next door to the school. She often attends masses and we know her as the "flying nun" as she drives in her little car across the field as she finds it difficult to walk. Father Mark Walls is floating around somewhere too.

I can imagine if you were to visit today a few things would have changed from your time. There are projectors in every classroom and are predominately used by teachers instead of whiteboards/blackboards. Electronic, touch screen whiteboards are also beginning to be introduced too.

We have a room dedicated to design with a suite of 20+ imac computers as well as a painting/art room. We also have 2 computer rooms and there's other computers scattered around the school as well. There's also wireless internet and students can connect from their own laptops.

If you look around the school and in students books you'll find many inappropriate penis drawings... I guess some things will never change

I showed some of my friends from school your comment and we had a laugh about it.

Hi again,

Great to hear that Sr. Frances Marie's doing ok... I did some googling and saw that Fr. Walls is quite active with some national Catholic Youth programmes, so I wasn't sure he'd still be based at 'Stream...

iMacs! Touch Screen Whiteboards! Wireless Internet! I'll make it a point to stick my head past the school next time I'm in NZ...

I also read in one of the newsletters that good old "Sir" Maloney from the tuck shop passed away last year - buying cream buns will never be the same again...

Re. the tuck shop: there used to be a House Sports Points whiteboard hung outside, made by "Daz & Bird", but the House names were always being changed so I guess it isn't there any more... I was "Bird"...

I also checked out some of yours & other 'Streamers work on "Creative Stream" - excellent site...

Nicely done!

As for the spine, I've done a few book covers and normally the printers tell you how thick the spine will be once they know the paper weight and number of pages etc.

I generally do a mock-up so the people I'm working with know what I want to do, and then adjust it slightly once I have the right dimensions from the printer.

If you ever end up doing this sort of thing again (and I hope you do, you're damn good at it), just ask the printer before you send off the final file. Every printer I've worked with (even the crappy ones) has always been more than helpful when it comes to stuff like that, and it shouldn't delay the project any.

Most printers will need to let you know thier requirements anyway as they all do things just a little bit different from each other. Some I've worked with wanted each cover and the spine as seperate files, some wanted them all together as a single image with the inside covers as well, JPG vs PDF, 2,3,5mm bleed, margins and guttering, the list goes on and on
