What the hell. Those bloated chelicerae don't even look functional.

The jaws, which are the bloated dark parts below his face.

mo-ten In reply to Ramul [2013-02-12 11:13:44 +0000 UTC]

ooh..i see, so it was called chelicerae, is it functional or not i dont even know, all i know is to keep a distance after capturing his picture lol

Ramul In reply to mo-ten [2013-02-13 09:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Why? Jumping spiders aren't harmful to humans in general. They might only jump onto the camers.

mo-ten In reply to Ramul [2013-02-13 11:20:53 +0000 UTC]

well, im okay with the small one, but this one is quite big (almost as big as my palm), so im a bit afraid at that time lol ..

Ramul In reply to mo-ten [2013-02-13 13:03:42 +0000 UTC]

If a spider from a family that rarely gets bigger than 2 cm is as big as your palm, you must be really small.

mo-ten In reply to Ramul [2013-02-13 23:04:02 +0000 UTC]

im asian,if u compare to a westerner yes im small indeed lol.. i'm sure this one is bigger than a 2cm, thats why i can easily crop this image from a whole body to a head only image

Ramul In reply to mo-ten [2013-02-13 23:11:33 +0000 UTC]

Did you measure with or without the legs? Spiders are generally only measured by the body length, without the legs. However, I'm not big, either, and for covering my palm it needs a Tegenaria-sized spider.
As a reference, this is the largest known jumping spider: [link]

i'm not sure if it was a jumping spider after seeing that video, this creature was bigger than the one in the video, i just uploaded the full body image of this spider, maybe u can take a look and help me to identify this creature ( [link] ) . btw the platform he was standing on was around 10-15cm wide .. ooh anyway thanks for keep replying, im happy to have this kind of conversation, it give me more knowledge about the subject in my images

Ramul In reply to mo-ten [2013-02-14 10:15:01 +0000 UTC]

Your spider is definitely a jumping spider, as the eye arrangement and prosoma shape shows. If this spider is indeed bigger than the Hyllus diardi, it might be even possible that it's a yet unknown species, so maybe show it to an arachnologist, especially a local one. If it is a known species it will probably be easily identified due to the unusual chelicerae, if not... congratulations on discovering a new species.
