Ever since the very first moment I saw this image, I am struck by the intrinsic beauty and human value of it. It's an image that appeals to me, in a way that is hard to describe. But I do think it deserves much more attention than it has received until now, so even though I am not used to writing critiques, and find it hard to do that in a language not my own, in this case I want to try...
What we see here is a man in traditional clothing, walking straight towards the camera. Old and weary, slightly bended and leaning on his walking stick, his face troubled and worried, his eyes dark and deep... While he is walking straight up to the camera (and so to us, the watchers), he doesn't seem to see us... it is as if he is not looking at us, but through us. The man is alone, and somehow isolated by the empty space around him.
In the background, many people... young people, in mostly modern clothing. They are standing, or walking from right to left in the picture... opposite directions... no contact whatsoever. Behind him, life is buzzing and moving - for him, life is dragging on, and nearly stands still. The people behind him, they don't even see him. He is, as the title suggest, 'Invisible'...
In fact nobody sees him, except...: the photographer. And because she does, so do we... As watchers we are drawn into this reality of old age, poverty and loneliness and our eyes are invited to wander, from the troubled, vulnerable face of this old man, to the vital and busy activity behind him, and back ...
A picture with big contrasts, great clarity and depth a field, food focus and lighting, and marvellous framing... And a message that touches my heart... A human document!
I'll be back here, often, just to look!

This photo is so strong and briliant! The man looks like from the other world, especially with those young, quick and "modern" people behind him. In his face is whole his life, suffering, but some very penetrating strength as well. Very fascinating and unforgettable face!

seriously Marwa... you have change my opinion about portraits..
i used to think portraits were boring and dull, but you have a way of taking a simple photograph of a simple person and making it look extraordinary!
