I think it was because The bird was gathering quite a crowd by the time this shot rolled around in the session. The direct sunlight on the white parts of the bird was blowing out badly and I shot a ton of different settings without a real good one. when the exposure was right the bird had moved to a shitty angle. I started out with the 300mm f-2.8 and a 2X TC, (it's what I had on when I found him) and it was too much lens. I got what I could with that. By then, it looked like it was going to let me get a few more shots so I slipped off the 2XTC and got a few more shots (bracketing like crazy). I was moving farther and farther back , which is more and more into the road. I was almost blocking traffic. this made a crowd of photographers start to gather and the bird was getting restless and moving around allot (this is a natural nature park area for bird & wildlife watchers , photographers and school field trips) and my sticky bogen 2 inch ballhead makes it hard to make fine adjustments, so out of the 30 or so shots of this awesome bird with prey only a few would pass most of the hivewasp technical challenges and none would pass all of them. I was a little bummed when I went through all the shots and seen that they didn't pass all of mine either. it's mostly cause of the sticky ballhead. When you push hard enough to get it to move, it will move too far and getting it back means even more moves and time that I didn't have. I was still kicking myself in the ass for missing the redshoulder hawk with a huge swamp snake in it's claws sitting a on a branch a few hours before (so I wasn't going to miss this "bird with prey" shot) I really didn't want to go home from Florida hating myself again like last year when I missed a ton of killer shots cause my equipment wasn't fast enough. like slow and clumsy tripod heads and legs made by bogen. the gitzo explorer with a Wimberley head is the fastest head and legs I know of right now

It's been a while since I've been around to your gallery, and I forgot how great your photos are! A wonderful source for inspiration and motivation. The Osprey is beautiful!

Wow, the bokeh from that lens is fantastic! It's so sharp and the colors are awesome too, sweet shot.

If only the tale weren't cliped, I had it going as a favorite, yet can't quite do so. I have had two strong spiritual moments with the Osprey we have here along the river. The first involved 4 of them and the second one 3 of them. What a show they put on, I have a very high respect for them.
I feel as you do I'm sure about the tail being cliped, so close yet so far. I've had a couple myself and we just do what we can kep hoping, keep praying.
Enjoy have fun,
Roseonin

The bird, in itself is astounding, but the fact that you also got him eating a fish make this simply amazing wildlife photography.

out of the 30 or so shots of this bird very few didn't have some white blown out like that. direct sunlight mixed with shade on an osprey is one tough cookie to shoot...the shinny fish made it even harder

Why such a small file size? Anyways I love this shot. It is one of the best shots I've seen of an Osprey. I don't mean to sound grosse but the blood is really awesome. It just makes the contact between the bird and fish that much more real. Great shot once again!

Still pretty small. You can hardly see the sushi on the things beak. Nice though, very nice.
