Grand Slam was a shy, introverted child who was fascinated with comic books and science fiction. This love of future technology led him to pursue a degree in electronics engineering while in the US military. Grand Slam eventually breezed through the military's Special Weapons School (graduating top of his class), Artillery School, and Advanced Technology School. His natural skills made him an instant choice for the original G.I. JOE team, where he specialized in everything cutting edge, from Heavy Artillery Laser (HAL) cannons to J.U.M.P. jet packs, to miniaturized remote controlled missile systems.

General Hawk: “This is one soldier who can't stop moving forward. If he gets injured, he jumps right back up again. If he can't pinpoint the enemy with lasers, mortars or missiles, he straps on a jet pack and fires himself right on top of them. This would seem foolhardy and reckless, if his calculations weren't right on the money every single time.”

I always felt bad for Grand Slam because his character often got mixed up with or overlooked because he wore the exact same uniform as fellow Joe member Flash. It wasn’t until they gave him the silver/gray uniform pads to distinguish him from Flash when he came with the J.U.M.P. jet pack/launch pad set that he finally stopped being mistaken for Flash.

Despite this Grand Slam stood out as a bad ass in the early G.I. Joe comics and I wanted to capture that with this art piece. He was always shown to be fearless and seemingly reckless during missions but he always managed to pull off a win in a spectacularly dramatic fashion and defy death no matter how bad the odds were stacked against him.
