Well you guys voted for it on the last classic NES poll I had and here it is, Contra.

This took way longer than I expected simply because I forgot the final boss was this big freaky alien heart. So it kind of fucked up my plans to do it from a different angle since looking at it from any other angle would kind of make the heart not look right.

So I decided to do it from the classic side view like in the game but make it look a bit more like a three dimensional cavern housing this gigantic alien heart inside the bowels of the island.

The arteries and veins coming off of it in the game were kind of limited to the same repeating pattern above and below it so I decided to make it look like this thing has just massive and small tangled up arteries coming from above, below and behind it fueling the alien infested island with its life blood.

I expanded the color pallet to purples with deep reds with the arteries just to show off the intertwining of them better. Also I figured it’s an alien heart so why wouldn’t it have different colored tubing than a human one.

I added a bit more classic Alien and Xenomorph details to the eggs crawlers and those weird ass dangling heads that were randomly hanging from the ceiling of the cavern in the original game. Also to add some contrast I made the blood and goo from inside the eggs green.

I went with dark purple veined walls rather than the solid black ones from the NES to imply this part of the island was literally morphing into an organic living alien being the soldiers were fighting inside.

Since both character Bill Rizer and Lance Bean were inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger from Predator and Sylvester Stallone from Rambo I kind of kept their designs close to the actors from the films but didn’t make it a full on likeness of them.

For Bill Rizer (named for Bill Paxton and Paul Reiser from Aliens) I gave him the white tank top he’s seen wearing in the title screen of the game as well as the cigar he has. I though it made him look more bad ass and hard-boiled like the original Nick Fury from Marvel Comics

For Lance Bean ( Named after Lance Henriksen and Michael Biehn from Aliens) I kept him with the original shirtless look from the game but gave him wounds and scars like Rambo has.

I gave both of them futuristic rifles but decided against coloring them red and blue like in the game but I did add small red and blue detailing to them. Lance has the Spray Machine Gun and Bill has the normal Machine Gun since they're my favorites from the game.

For both guns I made the bullets energy based as shown on the cover of the game.

I also gave both digital camo patterns rather than straight up red and blue pants with belt buckles patterned after the gun power up medals you can get in each level.
