I know your comment is old, but I want to say I agree with you on this. Why DOESN'T Shadow just go back in time and save Maria?! He's clearly demonstrated that you can go back in time with Chaos Control. Heck Silver and Sonic broke the boundaries by going back to save Princess Elise!
And Shadow and Silver went back in time by ten years. If you could do that with two Emeralds, then you could clearly go even further with all 7 emeralds!
What's stopping Shadow from just doing that?!

I personally believe that Shadow doesn't do this because he has learned to accept his past and let it be as it is. Including Maria, the black aliens, the humans turning against him. He's done with it and tries to live with it because this all has become part of him now. Shadow accepted his destiny and grew as a character during his own game, which strongly became visible in 06.
...at least this is my interpretation.
Another thing would be: Changing what has already been done is incredibly dangerous. You should not mess with the flow of time itself - especially when you are able to it takes a great responsibility to resist. Imagine what would happen if Shadow really saves her.
Maria is save.
which means that nothing ever happened.
everything - poof.
Maybe someone else will die in Maria's spot.
Maybe Sonic will never be born.
and last but not least - it would be incredibly, incredibly selfish. And unfair towards anyone else who may have had problems they want to make undone, but can't. I too would like to repeat, like, Β the past two years, but no one's been asking me. =/
I guess Shadow was simply wise enough to not intefere in these kinds of greater goods. Good job, Shadow. Keep fighting like you always have.
