Description

Congratulations to the QuillDog community members-- they came together and solved all parts of the riddle that I created in place for celebrating reaching 400 QuillDogs! You might notice that the storyline throughout the riddle was that of magic and spells and books and lore—and that’s because I’m very happy to introduce the following QuillDogs, which you have successfully awoken from their statue forms!

These QuillDogs are all based upon mythical creatures from around the world, all of which include a canine/wolf in some capacity. Please note that these designs are merely loosely inspired by historical descriptions of mythical creatures, and is in no way meant to be a historical representation, or created in a manner to disrespect anyone’s culture, religion or heritage. These were made out of genuine interest in the cultures from which they were inspired, something I hope to share through my art!

The following are descriptions (paraphrased from Wikipedia) of the mythical creatures which I utilized as inspiration for each design. Please note that the designs above are LOOSELY inspired by these:

Akhlut: In Inuit mythology, Akhlut is an orca spirit that takes the form of a gigantic wolf or a wolf-orca hybrid when on land. It is a vicious, dangerous beast that ventured onto land in order to hunt humans and other animals. Its tracks can be recognized because they are wolf tracks that lead to and from the ocean, indicating that the creature is waiting for prey under the water nearby. Little is known of this spirit other than that it changes from an orca to a wolf when hungry.

Cù-Sìth: According to Scottish folklore, the Cù-Sìth is said to be the size of a young bull with the appearance of a dog. Its fur is shaggy, and usually cited as being dark green though sometimes white. Its tail is described as being long and either coiled up or plaited (braided). Its paws are described as being the width of a man's hand. The Cù-Sìth is thought to make its home in the clefts of rocks in the Highlands; it was feared as a harbinger of death and would appear to bear away the soul of a person to the afterlife.

Cadejo: This is a supernatural character from Central American folklore. There is a good white cadejo and an evil black cadejo. Both are spirits that appear at night to travelers: the white to protect them from harm during their journey, the black (sometimes an incarnation of the devil) to kill them. The colors of the cadejo are sometimes exchanged according to local tradition. In some places, the black cadejo is seen as the good one and the white cadejo the evil one. They usually appear in the form of a large (up to the size of a cow), shaggy dog with burning red eyes and a goat's hooves, although in some areas they have more bull-like characteristics. Most people say never to turn your back to the creature because otherwise you will go crazy. Speaking to the cadejo will also induce insanity.

Penghou: The Penghou is a tree spirit from Chinese mythology and folklore. One historical account states “During the Wu Kingdom, Jing Shu felled a big camphor tree. Then the wood bled and inside there was an animal that was similar to a dog…” Another account explains the entity as “a creature that has evolved from the essence of wood is called Penghou. It looks like a black dog with no tail…”

Surma: Surma is a character in the Finnish folklore of Kalevala. Surma is a terrible beast, embodies sudden, violent death and guards the gates of the Tuonela to prevent escape. It is often described as being a large dog with a snake-tail and can turn people into stone with a stare.

Simargl: A deity or mythical creature in East Slavic mythology, depicted as a winged lion or dog. Simargl is kept chained to the star Polaris in the constellation Ursa Minor, to prevent him from breaking free and destroying the constellation, and causing the world to end.

Simurgh: The simurgh is depicted in Iranian art as a winged creature in the shape of a bird, gigantic enough to carry off an elephant or a whale. It appears as a peacock with the head of a dog and the claws of a lion. The simurgh is inherently benevolent and unambiguously female. It has an enmity towards snakes, and its natural habitat is a place with plenty of water. Its feathers are said to be the colour of copper, and it was originally described as being a dog-bird.

Please also note that these are extremely rare LOREBELLEX QUILLDOGS. Unlike most other QuillDogs, Lorebellex QuillDogs CANNOT be obtained through normal means (custom commission, etc.) -- instead, this specific subspecies must be earned in some way-- for example, completing a task, solving a mystery, winning a QuillDogs contest. You guys did just that! Lore, the cration deity of the QuillDogs world, created an intricate, elite secret guard to protect Corabelle (and, in turn, herself). She elected to name this elite guard the Lorebellex-- noting the combination of Lore and Corabelle for the namesake. If you'd like more information pertaining to the Lorebellex, please read here:
