Yeah, I really wished to see them happy...but since this is a Vampire Hunter D story, it was bound to be ending in tragedy, I guess.
I guess, D was relived later on, because there wouldn´t be another dhampir like him(because Meier didn´t want to bite her, which was kinda obvious, even if Charlotte was tempting him to in some scenes, so another dhampir would have been a realistic following up thought)...even if there are some storys in which he shows compassion towards a young woman, who is becoming mother of a dhampir(from what I got the story on the manga implies that the baby might be D´s half-sibling) too. I guess it´s complicated to be something in between, neither human nor vampire...because you are feared by both.

But if only they flew away together when she was alive... Even if dhampir was born, he would live in a place, where no one would fear him, I guess.

I think it was. Sooner or later Meier might have turned insane from hunger and might have bitten his dear Charlotte later on. An eternity in space would have made her die anyway...so either the dhampir theory....or he would have bitten her. Both seem likely. But, i bet none of them would have liked to see the other one suffer. That´s why I guess it was all a nice dream for human-friendly Vampires like Meier Link. HE looked so melancolic, even besides his darling Charlotte, that´s why I guess that he knew of this two possibilities I tought of.
Normally, everyone would be overjoyed and happy to be with his or her darling, right? Thats why I believe Meier Link saw it coming too, but at least tried to reach something like an utopia.

I thought about it too. Like, what would she eat there as a human, and who would Meier feed upon. And even if there was some sort of supply of certain products, what would Meier do when Charlotte gets old and dies? I guess he would turn her eventually.

A doomed love, from the start to the end, because he wanted her to stay human, right? So he would have had to supress his hunger AND see her die of old age too. That would be totally cruel, right? Its much like he planned to take the guilt for everything in the end.
I guess thats why dying was kind of a relief for those two, in some way.
