Reminds me of how LUMi, a Vocaloid based on a jellyfish, is on her way...
Vocaloid gets weird, what with Frankenstein monsters, androids, fairies, an elf, an angel, a fox girl, a wolf boy, a dinosaur kid and all the rest we have. Then you get more normal concepts like the twins Anon and Kanon and your actually surprised people make a fuss for all the wrong reasons.

yeah, it became a issue with V3, to the point wherein the studios had to take notice. The newer V4 vocaloids have more uniqueness, but only with how they behave since they changed the recording style. But the result is you get Vocaloids with traits that are a mix of one past vocaloid and another.
Funny thing is, coming off the back end of V2 and into V3 I remember all the protests about how "unique" each vocal was, and "no Mew sounds like Mew and no Lilly,Meiko, etc". Even I remember at Vocaloid Otaku forums and the wikia pointing out in real life, you get vocal impersonators that can sound like anther person either naturally or with training. If Vocaloid is a reflection of said real life, then many aspects of it will end up inside it. It is possible for two or more Vocaloids to sound alike by accident, such as was Chika sounding like Gumi. Instead of focusing on how a vocaloid is alike, one should focus on how their unique, as every Vocaloid has a unique set of samples. Though some vocaloids share samples between their vocals, particularly if they have extra voicebanks, they end up not being able to produce the same result "out of the box".
Ironically, some of the most unique vocaloids are often the most discriminated against, which is the Engloids. They have more samples a vocaloid has, the variation is created, causing realism to go up and more particular ways the vocaloid can sound different to its peers. In fact, the Japanese vocaloids have been getting more samples over time, namely triphonetic data, which is having such an effect too.
For the moment, the Chinese vocaloids are now taking off with several now on the way and a Miku Chinese.
