Description
A Convoy of the Redball Express, France, September 1944.
The Reedball Express was the ad hoc logistics system that kept the US Army supplied during the breakout from the Normandy Beaches in the late Summer and Early Fall of 1944. The breakout and pursuit of the German Army across France was totally unexpected by the Allied planners and therefore there wasn't sufficient time to establish the pipelines for fuel, and rail lines for bulk supplies necessary to sustain the rapid advance. The pursuit of the German Army was instead supplied by consolidating thousands of trucks into a massive convoy system that operated 24/7 pushing supplies from the beachheads to the forward lines. The majority of the soldiers manning the Redball Express were African American who made up the segregated Truck Companies that conducted what many believe is the the most impressive logistics achievement in military history.
