I'm fascinated by the odd edge this photo walks on - one between vigilance (namely because of the presence of the shouldered sword) and quiet reflection (suggested in part by the girl's casual dress and lucid stare off-frame). While you identify the girl's reason for holding the sword as purely stylistic, I enjoy the possibility that it allows the portrait as a whole to lend itself to both character and narrative imagination. The use of natural light and the heavy form of the katana-hilt are lovely...cool photo.
