Gene Deitch was the father of KIM Deitch, who worked in underground comics. Such outrages as WALDO*, Shadowland, ...would have gotten him burned at the stake 500 years ago, and as recently as 100 years ago, would have gotten him permanently ostacized from decent society.

Sure.Β For a bunch of cartoons made by animators that didn't know what the hell they were doing.

I like Terrytoons as much as the next guy.Β Tom and Jerry isn't a Terrytoon.
Then again, I really like how the Chuck Jones ones look, but they're such a wildly mixed bag of writing quality that I still can't decide if I actually like them overall.Β And I LOVE Chuck Jones.

I'm not a huge fan of the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry Era (I kinda prefer the Jones and Hanna-Barbera Eras over Deitch), I don't hate it, I honestly kind of think that the Gene Deitch Era was underrated just because of how bizarre yet entertaining they were, and this was one of the best ones, along with Cartoon Kit, Carmen Get It and Tall in a Trap, the only Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry cartoons I hate are the ones with Clint Clobber.

Those Clint Clobber ones were proof Gene hated working on these, oddly enough because of violence.Β I'd say the last batch of episodes actually worked, and "Buddies Thicker than Water" almost feels like a classic short.Β But there was an enormous learning curve and the foreign animators really didn't get American Tom and Jerry humor.Β But those first ones where Tom gets curbstomped repeatedly by Clint are just unwatchable and make Tom a designated villain, even though Jerry's at his worst. There are great episodes of the original where Tom was minding his own business and Jerry started crap, but at least there was a level of balance.Β But I don't disagree that these have some charm to them, especially when the writing got better.
And while I'm on the subject, I've yet to see any Droopy cartoon or interpretation nearly as good as the originals.Β Maybe the Coffee Shop one that CN made in the 90's and his cameo in Roger Rabbit.Β But those Filmation ones are dreadful.Β And I actually kinda dig their Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Some of them are actually quite good, near the end of the run.Β It's the international humor barrier that really ruins there flow.Β Some of the jokes come off strange.
And yeah, the Clint Clobber ones are just unwatchable.Β If Gene was making a statement about cartoon violence and showing that human on animal violence isn't funny, Bravo.Β He was roped into this by William Snyder and he didn't much care for them.Β If it turns out it's just not being able to write a zip chase cartoon, then that's because that was never his style.
And I'll give him this.Β Unlike the Chuck Jones ones, Gene never wrote a cartoon where Jerry and another sadistic mouse trick Tom into thinking he's committing suicide while he's sleeping.

Totally gonna buy that in time.Β There's so much to love about these cartoons ironically.Β Almost want a Filmation collection, but supposedly, there's some weird music rights hold up on that and the Mighty Mouse cartoons (which actually were pretty good).

Yeah.Β What's with all the creepy, echoy reverb?Β And ever see Dicky Moe?Β Why does the Captain Ahab character sound like someone left a cassette tape out in the sun and the tape player is eating it?Β Don't see what that adds to the cartoon.

Warner Home Video will be releasing the Gene Deitch "Tom and Jerry" cartoons onto DVD this summer! I'm gonna buy!

Found that out a couple days ago.Β I HAVE to freaking get that one.Β Not so much for the good ones like Carmen Get It and Buddies Thicker than Water, but for the so bad it's good ones like Dicky Moe, where the Ahab expy keeps mumbling "Dickie Moe" over and over and the one with the diseased, Terrytoons looking bird that somehow Tom wants to eat.Β Just for the scene where he gets boiled alive andΒ jumps around going "Fweeep fweep fweep fweep."

Heh, that captain was pretty funny. I especially liked his "COME BACK WITH MY WHALE!"
And the other one you're taking about is "Landing Stripling." And yes, that WAS a weird-looking bird.

Well, that's what you get when the guy who does the cartoons hates the cartoon he's working on.
But, to be fair, the last 3 were pretty respectable.Β Buddies Thicker than Water is a pleasant surprise.Β Much better than the early ones where every human abused Tom.

Unfortunately, neither of the cartoons had Tom win in the end, or have them end in a Tie. I'd rather go for the Chuck Jones cartoons if I want a substitute.
