The back roads of Kansas. The countless county roads that crisscross between farm fields and the occasional small towns are almost always dirt and sometimes not wide enough for two cars to pass without one pulling off to the side. Yes, there are paved roads connecting smaller cities. Most of the time these back roads are wind blown and dusty, sometimes muddy. Such roads are the best way to see the countryside up-close and judge its character. Still largely agricultural, the countryside in Kansas is dotted with countless farms, cattle ranches and the occasional oil well or structures related to the oil industry. The "neighborhood watch" ethic is strong in this state. Two days recently, while out taking photos, I had stopped off to the side of the road, both times a farmer/rancher has driven up and stopped to see what I was doing, (even though I was on public property.) The last time, yesterday, was in this very spot and the fella had driven up this road to investigate. Residents of these country homes are proud and protective. Had I been up to "no good" I would have been caught and there's a good chance these Kansas country dwellers are packing heat (carrying a sidearm or long gun.) Of course if I needed assistance they would have helped me. They've long since learned that these back roads (which they frequent) have no law enforcement present except for their keen eyes. They will investigate anything out of the ordinary.
