Author: Hannah (meowimhannah)
Genre: Fluff / AU - Soulmate & Royalty / Angst (only a tiny bit though, idk)
Word Count: 1,283
Warnings: None , just a v cheesy ending i guess (i apologise)
Summary: Based on a prompt on phanfic.tumblr.com sent in by glynna-gold , who then sent it to me on tumblr ^-^

Please read the prompt before reading the phanfic :

Dan is the prince of a fantasy land, Phil is his Protector. You also only see colour after meeting your soulmate.

In this society royal children are assigned a protector from birth, and this is often the child of the King’s advisor/own protector. At 18 a ball is thrown to try get the heir to find their soulmate so they can start to see in colour, a phenomenon called the Iris Candela (~‘brightening of the rainbow’).
BUT both Dan and Phil have been able to see colour as long as they remember because they’ve known each other their whole lives. They just didn’t realise this is what they’ve been told to expect about the Iris Candela (as it’s their norm and colour is difficult to describe). At the ball, after no change in his vision, King Howell explained more to him, and Dan realises it’s because of Phil, who he has loved romantically for years in secret. Meanwhile, Phil is upset at the ball as 'his’ Dan is going to find 'the One’ and then will officially never be his.

Including lots of past unrequited feelings dueling with a sense of duty and honour.
Getting together fic, fluff with mild angst and a happy ending ~ pretty please with Japhan cherry blossoms on top!

“I don’t want to have a “ball” for my Birthday,” The Prince said for what felt like the hundredth time. His Protector listening intently to him as he complained. “I don’t care that turning eighteen is a special event in my life, and that I have to find my soul mate. I want to be able to find them when the moment is right. Not in a forced environment under the watchful eye of my parents”.

Dan knew at the age of eighteen that, a strange phenomenon would occur in his body. The Iris Candela. His parents told him that this meant he would, as soon as he found his soul mate from then on, be able to see in “colour”. He really didn’t understand what this meant. He could see perfectly well in his vision right now for as long as he could remember, and he remembered asking Phil about it who said the exact same thing. They both didn’t understand.

He didn’t want to find his soulmate yet. Even if he had the opportunity to now. He wanted it to be magical and have the experience out of the blue, not in a crowded hall where everyone would be looking at him and waiting.

He had always wandered who his soul mate was. Was it a she? Was it a he? He knew he would accept and love whoever it was, regardless of gender. It was his soul mate, and if they were destined to be then that was that.

Phil, on the other hand, was twenty and was still waiting for his soulmate. He remembered on the day of his Eighteenth he was told by his Mother, the Protector of the King (Dan’s Father), that he was now able to meet the love of his life and be able to see and experience the beauty of colour. But everything to him now was beautiful. Especially Dan, but that was something he didn’t really want to admit aloud.
He didn’t think his best friend would think of him in that way. He was just Phil. Dan’s Protector.

Phil would never admit his true feelings. He felt ashamed of himself. Even though he knew the Kingdom was accepting, he didn’t think Dan would accept it himself. As in the fact that this was Phil. There was nothing “special” about him, other than the fact he was the Protector of the Prince.

So when it came to the night of the ball, Phil had kept his distance from Dan. He felt it best for that evening, since he didn’t want his feelings of jealousy to get in the way of the big event. He knew he wouldn’t be the soul mate, he could feel it in his gut. He had changed in to something smarter for the evening, and made his way to Dan’s bedroom, where Dan had asked him the day before to meet.
He didn’t want to let his best friend down, who had told him how nervous he was feeling.

Dan opened the door after he heard Phil knocking, smiling brightly at his best friend as he saw him. Phil gave him a small smile back, and marvelled to himself over how great Dan was looking. They accompanied each other down to the great hall, where the even was taking place. Phil left him after they entered, as he saw Dan’s parents coming over to them. He turned to Dan and said a quick goodbye before wandering off to find his small group of friends.

Dan looked around at all the people who had turned up, all talking in their social groups, some even dancing to the music that was playing. But, nothing had changed in his sight as he glanced at the people of the Kingdom. Everything was just the same as it was before.

Throughout the night, girls and guys had been asking him to dance. He had accepted, although he knew they were just trying to impress him and ask if he had found his soulmate yet. After a while, he decided to go out for some air, although he what he really wanted to do was go up to his room and be unsociable for the rest of the evening. He stepped outside and saw Phil out there too (who had left due to the inevitable jealousy in the pit of his stomach from watching Dan dance with potential “lovers”).

He gave him a small smile and went over to him, “hey, I haven’t seen you much this evening. Where have you been?” He asked him.

Phil gave a shrug, “didn’t want to ruin your night. You don’t want your old best friend and Protector around you whilst you’re trying to find ‘the one’.”

“Don’t be so silly, Phil,” Dan replied, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips. “Of course I want you round. You’re my best friend.”

Phil gave him a small smile, “so..any luck?”
“No, everything’s still the same. My eyesight hasn’t improved. I told you, and everyone else, it is completely fine how it is!”
“I know, I’m the exact same.”

Later on that night, Dan had been sat with his mother and father in his bedroom. Both had been discussing the events of the evening, and their father had had words with others who had more knowledge of Iris Candela.

“Daniel,” his father started. “I have been talking, and I’ve heard that perhaps you’re vision is fine because you can already see in colour. I thought that was mad, you haven’t found your soul mate yet! Though, the man went on to talk about how on rare occurrences, the person can already see in colour before their eighteenth birthday, as they have already laid eyes on this soulmate, and it usually is because they have known that soulmate their whole life, I think this might be the case for you. You’ve already found your soulmate, Daniel..” His father explained.

Dan sat and thought for a few moments, processing what his father had just told him, “So, who could it be the—”
Before he could finish speaking, Phil had walked in to his bedroom carrying Dan’s attire for the morning. He looked over at the three and stood straight, knowing this was respectful in the presence of royal figures (he was told not to bother by Dan, saying he didn’t mind how he presented himself), “I’m sorry, am I interrupting something, your highness?” Phil asked them.

Dan smiled at Phil, before the penny dropped in his mind and he looked to his mother and father. “What if it’s Phil?! Phil is someone I’ve known my whole life!” He said.
Dan wasn’t going to lie about his feelings of love for Phil. They were secret, and he was very good at hiding them. He hoped what he was saying now was a possibility, as Phil was someone he had known as far back as he could recall. After all, he was his bestest friend, and of course his Protector.

“Excuse me, Daniel?” Phil replied.
“Don’t you see?! We’ve both complained of having the perfect vision for years now. Maybe father’s right. Maybe we’re soulmates?”
“W-we could be…”
Dan grinned at Phil before getting up out of his bed and running over to Phil, wrapping his arms around him tightly and almost knocking him over by the force.
“If it’s true, then it’s perfect,” he said. “I could not wish for anyone better..”
Phil’s heart warmed at the sound of this, a big smile appearing on his face as he dropped the clothes (accidentally, of course) and hugged him back tightly.

For this had been a moment he could have only dreamed of.
