This is a small slice of a large alternate history timeline I am creating.
The timeline diverges in 1320 with the seeds for a different outcome of the 100 years war. England successfully conquers France and the capital is moved to Paris by 1350. France interferes in the Papacy causing a major schism called Ambrosian Christianity with their pope in Milan. The interference in the Papacy causes large wars of religion with many opposing France. This gave an opportunity for England to conquer France in this timeline's equivalent to the 100 years war. English as a result practically died with its use limited to Cumbria and in the Kingdom of Scotland in the form of Scots. French almost completely replaces English.
The schism of Ambrosian Christianity led to a Third Lombard League forming and a subsequent evolution into a confederation akin to Switzerland. Now Northern Italy is united in one country with the exception of Venice.
One other major point of the timeline is a very alternate industrial revolution. A proto industrialization of waterwheels and windmills is far more widespread than OTL in Northern Italy and the Low Countries. In the 1840s the first commercially viable electric motors are invented which begins a small industrial revolution in the areas of the Alps. Their abundant water resources for small scale hydroelectric power facilitates this. By 1880 the invention of the steam turbine allows for the industrial revolution to spread to the coal heavy areas of Northern Europe. The game changer was the adoption of the wind turbine around 1910. It was inexpensive and suitable for many environments. Industrial processes are completely electrified and electric railways dominate transportation making the world quite environmentally friendly for the level of industrialization. The industrial revolution spreads very quickly around the world. Outside of Europe Southern Indian countries and China are the first to industrialize starting in 1930. The result is a very multipolar world with China, South Asia, and Europe being the primary economic centers.
The Italian Community is a safeguard against the aggression of the surrounding powers of France and Hungary. The goal is to ensure peace among its member states. The Italian Community is the wealthiest area of the world largely because of it being the birthplace of the industrial revolution.
