I'm getting vibes of Avernus's Worldleeches here.
Worldleech: In several locations across the world there are large wastelands. Their poisonous outer regions are full of sick creatures, withered or rotting while still alive; as one travels farther into the waste even they are gone and there is nothing but lifeless sand and rock. In the center of this waste there lies what appears to be an enormous tower, miles wide and stretching upwards as far as anyone can see. Upon closer examination this tower is made of some dry, unhealthy looking organic material and it is burrowed deep into the earth.
If the towers are traced upwards they are found to stretch up and up, passing right out of the atmosphere and eventually twisting and bending rather than being headed straight up. If followed long enough they eventually all lead to the same location - the moon. This is because they aren't towers at all - they are feeding tendrils, and the moon is actually a vast parasite that is slowly draining away the life and magic and substance of the world over millennia.
This is why the civilizations of the past were mightier and more populous than those of the present; the greater magics they depended on have been drained away, and as the life force of the world lessens it can support fewer people. As the parasite feeds magic will fade entirely, life will wither to a remnant and then nothing, and eventually the world itself will be drained into a withered husk, all its uncommon and useful substances devoured.
In the end the parasite will move on to a new victim having drained everything of value, leaving behind a dead, hollowed-out remnant of a world; cold, lifeless, airless, waterless.
