Description Fremont and Mosher Sts.
West Baltimore

Site of the originally unreported stop in the Baltimore Police transport of Freddie Gray, who 7 days later died of injuries suffered in police custody.   The police van was identified in security camera footage of this grocery store.  (Who would have ever imagined from looking at this store that they would have security cameras that really work?)

it was only on the day before the Baltimore Police internal investigation was to be released to the public that the police announced that the van carrying Gray made 4, and not 3 stops on the way to the Western District police station.  Upon arrival at Western, police determined that Gray was in "medical distress," and then set him to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in downtown Baltimore.  Between the time Gray was arrested, and the time that he arrived at Shock Trauma, he had sustained sever damage to his vocal cords and a severed spine (there are conflicting reports as to the severity of his spinal injuries)

Just out of curiosity, I had to see this place.  It's remarkably quiet there. . .

Yes, I am inclined to agree.  But I do want to follow the criminal trial - whenever that actually begins.
I'm going back there soon, to shoot this on film (instead of digital).

Thanks, Kat!
Even though I've been on my "annual dA winter hiatus" (see my Journal), I did happen to shoot that location again recently, with film.  But I haven't had a chance to scan the negatives yet.
But I will soon!

Thanks, Diane.  But the odd thing is that for a neighborhood with the reputation of Sandtown-Winchester, this is a remarkable peaceful little area. . .

Maybe it's just me, but I see a little bit of Europe in the design of this building.  I'll bet it was once a very nice building.  In fact, I'm surprised it's still standing.  We Americans like knocking down buildings when they get old.

A great photo Richard! I really like this series of photos you are doing. I was reading the comments about the TV news media and it's so true. I was lucky to be at an awards ceremony for local high school seniors where I live. These high schoolers are just extraordinary in all the good they do for others, all the while carrying 4.0 GPA's and getting ready to head off to schools like West Point and Princeton. But we Never see the media covering stories like this. Once at an event where our chief of police was awarding kids certificates of achievement, he asked "is there anyone from the media here?"..and of course there was not. He just shook his head. It might not be "sensational" enough for the TV media to deem worthy..but to the people that these kids help, it's quite sensational.

You hit-the-nail-on-the-head!   As inner-city neighborhoods, and other distressed and forgotten areas are concerned, there are almost no positive stories to serve as positive reinforcement for kids in those areas.  All they see are stories about crime and death, and they assume that's what the future holds for them.  That's why so many young black males (just as an example) figure that in their surroundings, they're not going to live much longer than 20 years, why invest time in getting a HS diploma, or even more education?  Why not just sell drugs, and make money now?  From their perspective, economically, it's not an irrational decision.  Sure, it's a pessimistic, if not fatalistic view of the world.  But trust me, the 'hood isn't exactly overflowing with hopes and dreams. . .

such awful things often happen in places one would never have thought of...
truth to be told, the police often overuse their qualifications.
Sadly it happens also where I live.
A couple of Years ago there was a case where a policeman run over a young man on a motorbike,
causing his death.
It took Years to prove how much the police manipulated the facts and evidence to prove
that it was this young man's fault,
while the truth was that he was simply driving home, obeying all the traffic regulations,
and the policeman was the guilty one there.
Sadly, the family of this young man never received even an apology.
They say that The darkest place is under the candlestick.
It occurs that the ones whose  obligation is to protect citizens
often count against them and avoid responsibility for breaking the law themselves..

Thanks so much, Bo.
It's so rare that buildings like this, in poor parts of town, make it to whatever age this building is.  In the US we don't value buildings very much when they get older. . .

It does look rather quiet there.  Interesting to see where that unreported stop took place.  Is that store actually in operation?

maxlake2 In reply to Cinnamoncandy [2015-05-15 03:57:59 +0000 UTC]

I think that it was in the right portion of the image.  There's a vacant lot across the street, where some houses were bulldozed a few years ago. . .
Yes, that store is operational.  I believe it's a Korean-American owned store, and their stores are always closed on Sundays.  The Korean-American community is very devout (at least here), and on Sunday there is no business activity.
